Short Rotation Willow Coppice Year 10

Last weekend I got my next section of willow cut. That makes for 4 years in a row I've cut a section.

This time I didn't log it up straight away, instead I've kept it in long lengths. That way I have other options of what I can do with it. It's a great resource that I can use for building temporary structures around the smallholding, or the children can use it for building dens.

The section when it's cleared does look like coppiced woodland, even though it's on such a small scale.

I then have to decided what I'm going to do the year after next. Next year will be the 5th section cut, and then, after that, the cycle will begin again. What I might do is leave it a few years so it all gets bigger and then start the cycle again. We'll have to see.

I plan on chipping the brash, so that can be used as mulch. I've left trimming up the previous cuts for now (they need reducing down to 3 stems), as I seem to be getting deer damage for the first time. Muntjac have become an ever increasing threat the last few years, from hearing about them being around when we first moved here, to seeing them all the time.

The video above shows the whole process from start to finish, and I'm always pleased to get this job done, it feels like one I can't miss!

Anyone else coppicing their timber for productive reasons?
