Chipping Brash

I seem to have done a lot of work with the trees on these 5 acres the last few months. What I need to do now is start tidying up before the grass starts to grow.

The first job is to chip all the brash that I've got piled around the place. The picture above shows the blackthorn I've taken from my little coppice. I'm still not finished in there, but it does feel like I've made an impact to stop it's spread.

The PTO powered chipper makes short work of those branches. They did take a bit of untangling, blackthorn is so spiky and gets laced together.

A reasonable pile of woodchip from it. Not sure what I will use it for, either for paths, or someone suggested on YouTube that I could grow mushrooms with some of the chip.

Looks so much better cleared.

The second lot was the tops of the willow trees. If I was shorter of firewood I would cut some of these up, but as it's stands there is no shortage here, so instead I chipped them.

The willow pulls through much easier. Another reasonable pile, but I still have a lot of oak to go. Unfortunately when driving back the steering on the tractor broke, so I'll need to sort that before I carry on!

What would you use the woodchip for?

  1. That's a good job done Kev, nice to have it all out of the way. I'd use the woodchip on paths mainly, make them a little less muddy.

  2. Compost and for paths next to the raised beds.
