The start of this week has been taken up with this little commission of making a couple of shelving units. The house is quite modern so we took the approach of using birch ply with the bare edge showing.
They wanted them adjustable so a series of 5mm holes for shelf pins was drilled every 32mm.
It's made for a very minimalist set of shelves that work well in this modern house. Or at least I think it does...
I wish we had a good source for birch ply. I have seen many great things about it. However, the only way I can obtain it is to special order it from a local store at about 4 times the rate of cabinet grade oak plywood with only a thin veneer layer on top and full of voids. Then I have to accept the mishandled sheets, abused by forklifts, so I end up ordering more than I really need just to get unmarred pieces. So I tend not to order it and use oak, edge band over the voids and very lightly sand the top surface.
They work well, and look brilliant.
