A Few New Tools

As I go deeper and deeper into making small batches of my products I'm always looking for ways to either speed up the process or to make it easier on myself.

One thing I spend a lot of time doing is sanding. I tend to use two orbital sanders for this and in all honesty it can be a little tough on my hands. I'm either holding the sander or holding the wood.

So I had a think about how I could improve this process. I knew a bench mounted disc sander would be the right answer, as well as a bobbin sander for all the curves I cut on my work.

So far they've been int he workshop a week and I'm loving having them there.

When I opened the boxes I did a short first impressions video about both the tools, probably a little too much of my own excitement of having a few new toys to play with, but hopefully it's fun.

So this should help me build up my stock levels on the run up until Christmas, and maybe allow me to have a few new products up and running by then as well.

  1. I have a combination spindle (bobbin) and belt (does the same thing as your disk) sander which frees up a bit of space. To make it even more space saving, it is attached to a flip top rolling cart with my planer attached to the other side. I can flip between them in about a minute and the occupy the space of just one.

    1. I like to keep tools separate where I can, I find if I don't I never end up chanigng them over and just making do. I guess it's some built in laziness somewhere in me that just likes to have things ready to go.

    2. I'm similar in thought though in the case of the planer and sander, it works out well since I rarely use both together. I plane my boards at the start of a project and sand at the end and the 1 minute it takes to change between isn't a bother to my laziness. Especially compared to the days when I had to dead lift the heavy planer up off a shelf and put it on my workbench every time I needed it. My laziness avoided doing that as much as possible!
