Second-Hand Greenhouse Build - Part 3 - The Bed!

I finished this a few weeks ago, but it's great to have the video to go with it. The second greenhouse is all ready to go and planted up.

In the end I built the beds out of some beams I had had left over from building my brother's porch five years ago

I felt a bit guilty using these beams, but honestly I'd left them out because they were the worst of the batch and they've been kicking around for 5 years. I dread to think how many times I've moved them. Enough was enough and I cut them up to suit the bed inside the greenhouse. At least being oak I know they should last a long time.

Moving all the stone and soil into there was tricky as well, as I have the step in the front it meant that it all had to be brought in, by hand, in buckets. I think I moved three full dumper buckets (although my dumper is small) of muck and soil, plus some stone to lay the path on.

In the video I also mention about the bought in compost I used. I did this to try to add a weed free layer on top. I would have loved to have a bulk bag, but it's just been too wet until now to move anything with the trailer and access is pretty bad here, when I have timber delivered I have to carry it up the drive! The irony being that now, a few weeks later, the bough in compost seems to be full of weed seed and they're sprouting up everywhere.

But it feels good to have it all up and running, I was worried I would miss this season with it. So far I've planted 5 aubergines (Listada De Gandia), 5 sweet peppers (flynn), 6 small cucumbers (Dar), Tomatoes (Cherry Falls to tumble over the sides) and two types of basil - Mammoth and finissimo. I also have 4 water melons almost ready to go in there - Siberian Lights.

Looking froward to all the harvests to come from this space in the coming months. One thing I really like about greenhouses is how it gives me another manageable space to work with. Sometimes the garden gets a bit wild, but a greenhouse is fairly easy to keep on top of.

Watch the video above and let me know what you think.

Are your greenhouses all planted up now?

  1. My greenhouse is full to bursting, I don't plant in the ground, but everywhere is full, some will be going outside soon.

  2. I cut up three partial (more than half) sheets of plywood recently for my daughter to decorate with all her accomplishments for her graduation party. If felt very wasteful to do that but they had been leaning again the side of my garage for probably 7 or 8 years. I was surprised at how happy I felt to have those gone and saw some other scraps that I had been saving but forgotten about, tucked away behind them.

    1. I think that's exactly it! I feel like a weight has been lifted getting rid of those oak beams, I feel like their waste has been weighing on my mind. I like having them in the greenhouse, it's done and I feel good about it!
