Make Some Pigeon Holes For Extra Space

We're always struggling for storage space, too much stuff is probably the reason in all honesty. And we do try to chip away at it, and reduce how much we buy as well.

But our porch isn't really big enough for the five of us, it was as big as I was allowed to build, but it is still a squeeze with all the coats and shoes (so many shoes). I decided a little extra vertical space would help so made a set of pigeon holes.

As is my way now I filmed the process, and the plans have been in Woodworking Crafts magazine.

It was a fun, fairly simple project to make using reclaimed boards and some spare plywood. It's been in use for a few months now and has been a great success.

Has it tided up the porch at all? No, but at least I can find my stuff now!

Could you do with some storage like this?

  1. Obviously, you don't have free ranging chickens. They'd LOVE the extra roosts and nesting boxes :-). Stuff expands to fill all available space. I think that's a truism from somewhere.

    1. My chickens normally do free range, but not into the porch thankfully!

  2. I guess over the years I have found that more storage simply equals more clutter. I'm not sure if you are familiar with the old American movie, Field of Dreams where the saying, "Build it and they will come" is a central part. In this case, I think build it and they will find a way to fill it. In our house, everyone stores all their outside peripherals in their bedrooms.

    1. I think you're probably right there! It has filled up and nothing seems any clearer!

  3. I should say though that I love projects like this that can be made out of scraps and then once your situation changes, i.e. the kids grow up, it can easily be removed and scrapped without any thought to the expense.

    1. Yeah, it wasn's a costly project and I got paid for a magazine article out of it, so killed two birds with one stone really. I'd probably sell it. I used to make and sell units like this, but the margins were a bit tight so only ever did a few.
