3 Course dinner Cooked By The Children

My wife was a way the weekend just gone, but me and the children still had a lovely time. We went to a friends for a fish and chip supper on Friday night, had a lovely sunny day outside on Saturday and Sunday we went swimming with friends and had a picnic in the park afterwards.  

On the Saturday the children were messing about making some fun fake food, when I suggested that if they liked they could plan a meal for when their mum got home, I said I wanted three courses! They jumped at the chance and grabbed some pens and paper to make a menu. 

They settled on Italian, I told them that before we go swimming we could pop to the shops and get anything extra they needed. The starter was fairly straight forward (above) and had everything they love! 

The main they decided on pasta but were determined they were going to make it themselves. 


The pasta maker doesn't get enough use really! It's good to get it down and use it, especially this time of year when there are plenty of eggs. 


The pasta wasn't perfect, but tasty. I think we probably need to do this one more together, but I really was trying to stay out of it so it was their meal. 



The desert was a particular delight. I had told them I didn't want a cake (I thought that was too easy for them), so they had to think a bit harder. 

And although I probably had to eat my weeks allocation of lactase tablets, it was one of the best panna cotta I've ever eaten. They got the set just right and the flavour was amazing.  

They were so proud of themselves and my wife and I felt very proud of them as well. A lovely meal cooked with love. The only thing we helped with was to strain the pasta, but otherwise we just left them to it. 

I love seeing their confidence build in the kitchen. I joke (semi-seriously) that I think I will try to persuade them not to get Saturday jobs and instead get their hygiene certificates and sell cakes instead.

  3. Italian is a lovely meal, they did a brilliant job. The hygiene certificate would not be hard for them to get as they already know most of the basic's.

    1. Yeah, I think it could work well for them if they decided to go that route. I just think if they got "proper" jobs at 14 or 15 then someone would basically be getting a bit too much for their money!

  4. Looks fantastic! I love that they were so enthusiastic and rose to the challenge.

    Good idea about making pasta with extra eggs! I have a ton of extras too at the moment and need some ideas.

    1. Yeah, it a great way to store the protein for another day. Fresh pasta or dried, it makes for a good meal. Although it must be said I grew up on a lot of pasta and now don't tend to cook it that much.

  6. What a great way to challenge your kids! We too have a pasta maker that gets used way less than it should. I can't recall any homemade pasta that I have eaten that was worse than the store bought stuff.

    For summer challenges, I would challenge them to a zero mile/kilometer meal where everything cooked and eaten has to be raised on your acreage. At least as much as possible.

    1. Yeah, I feel there is a bit of an art to pasta making, something we need to practice a bit more, but they really enjoy doing it.
      I like that challenge, in the summer I think that will be very doable.

  8. Looks amazing, Kev! Kudos to your kids for such a beautiful meal.

    It sticks with them as they get older, too. Our middle daughter is quite the cook overall and the older and younger are both reasonable bakers, all because they started practicing when they were young.

    1. Yeah, me and my siblings are all very into our food. It's nice when it's second nature because of the hours put in when younger.
