Broody Coop/Chicken Tractor Build Part 1

This summer we could have really done with an extra broody coop. Chicks don't always hatch as plan and sometimes come along completely unexpected.

We use the broody coop I built about 15 years ago all the time. It's the perfect safe place for a hen to hatch eggs and raise her young, also great as a sick pen. I know I've featured this old coop on here numerous times in the past, but it really is useful.
Making a new one is fairly simple, but it does take a bit of time.

Rather than explain how to build it here I've made a three part series of videos (the second one is out on Sunday evening). The first two videos show me making it step by step. The third video (next week) is a no talking construction of me making it.

The first video shows me making the basic frame, getting this right makes the rest of the build so much easier.

Give it a watch and let me know what you think.

  1. I have a feeling that the first spring we have with no plans to go anywhere on vacation until late fall or winter, I'll be building one of these.

    1. It;s a great little coop. I plan on building a bigger raised fixed coop off the back of the polytunnel next. Mesh floor and one open side, then in the winter they can have access to the polytunnel and in the summer out to the orchard.

  2. It looks good and very sellable if that's a word? Any chance on a post about different woods? For example I believe Larch will last twenty years.
