The children only need the slightest nudge to do some baking.
Tuesday night was the perfect example of this. I had a urge to eat an apple pie, and not being too short of apples decided to see if one of the children would be up for making me one.
The Middlest leapt at the opportunity and set to work making some pastry.
The Eldest came in then and looked a little disappointed that she hadn't got in on the act, so I suggested she make some bread from scratch.
She set to work putting the dough together, it wasn't long until the Youngest came in and offered his services. They took turns kneading it then set timers for the proving time.
They ended up running out of time to cook it, but did have enough time to shape them into 19 rolls for packed lunches. They plaited them to make them extra fancy.
The apple pie the Middlest cooked was from an old River Cottage Family Cook book that we turn to quite often. Baked in a French style (apparently) so we didn't need to blind bake the pastry. The pastry was only just cool enough to work with out the fridge, but it was ready for tea just on time. The last 5 minutes it's baked with a glaze of homemade apricot jam for that finishing touch!
I think we're spoiling each other when it comes to food in this family!
Anyone else constantly having to fight off baked goods?
My hubby does all the cooking and baking, he loves being in the kitchen, and he's a clean cook, he is always trying new things.
ReplyDeleteIt's always fun to try somethign new - although my wife would wish I wouldn't.
DeleteI too use the power of persuasion with my kids and baking. We can apple pie filling so they just have to put a crust into a pan, dump in the filling and bake. It is hard to beat having a pie to eat in less than an hour after the craving hits.
ReplyDeleteLast year I canned quite a bit of apple. I will try to this year. I imagine there is still a fair few on the floor at my mum and dads I can have for that purpose.
Deletehey kev! i don't know if you follow this guy but i bet you would find him interesting:

I hadn't! But I do now. Very interesting, especially the cultural differences. Thanks!
DeleteKev, all of our daughters love to bake and are more than happy to experiment with new recipes - mostly desserts, but bread and scones have made appearances.
ReplyDeleteI like them to try different things - mainly because then I get to try them! Today they're on about trying to make croissants! But with goats butter so I can have them as well.
