Last week I finished the annual summer prune of all my cordon apple trees.
This time I decided to film the process and hopefully share my wisdom on the subject. My main wisdom is just to make sure you try pruning them! Not pruning them is worse, and mistakes don't take that long to grow out!

DeleteIs this mostly specific to cordon apples or apple trees in general? We've been mostly been pruning our newest apple trees in late winter but they are still quite young compared to yours. Our old apple tree is 20+ feet tall and hasn't been pruned in ages though it could probably be thinned out on the interior. I really need to step up my pruning game as our new orchard starts to take off.
ReplyDeleteYeh, so the old rule of thumb was summer pruning was for trained fruit, it encourages fruiting buds. That said more and more people are coming on to the idea that pruning in the summer can be a good thing. The only time not to prune is when the sap is rising in late spring.
