Wendy House Repair

Dad phoned me up the other day and said he had taken the roof off the old Wendy house.

Dad will never admit when he wants or need a hand, and I could tell he needed one -

"So I've taken the roof off that old Wendy House..."

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah, don't think I'm going to be able to get it back on..."

Long pause,

"Want me to come over?"

"I mean only because you're coming over anyway..."

Dad, Dave (my brother) and me built this Wendy house for my sister about 25 years ago. I have some pretty clear memories of building it.

We took the wood from a really old tall sided trailer. Shows how good it is lasting that long on the trailer then lasting on the wendy house as well!

Originally it had a felt roof, but about 10 years ago I added some second hand tin. Unfortunately that tin was painted (when we got it, we didn't paint it). the last few years the paint has started to flake off and spread across the garden. We toyed with the idea of scrubbing the paint off, but it would only come off in patches.

Dad had some more tin so as I was the more agile of us (and that's really not saying much), I went on the roof and fixed down the new sheets.

Good to keep this Wendy house going and as my sister's girls start to get bigger I'm sure they'll love playing in it when they come to visit their grandparents.

Also kept dad happy, what was really nice was afterwards we went and messed about in his workshop so I could create some scoops using some of his machinery. More about that in the next post.

Who else manages to keep their garden buildings standing by constant repairs?

I mean this is roof number three, I wonder if I'll have to do it again?

  1. I have never heard the term "wendy" house. Does that refer to Wendy of Peter Pan? I just built my first backyard storage/greenhouse over the course of 2021 and 2022. So I'm hoping that I don't ever have to replace the roof, or at least by the time I need a new roof it will have to be someone else's problem. Perhaps I'll have to call one of my kids and give a subtle hint.

    1. Yeah I think it does come from peter pan where they refer to "Wendy's house". Its term used over here for any small house or den for children.

  2. Looks fab. I also haven't heard the term "Wendy house". Glad the united effort kept your dad off of the roof! I see more memories to be made in this cute lil' structure!

  3. That very much sounds like a "Dad' way of saying things. My father would have likely said it the same way. Well done.
