Metal & Wood Compost Or Feed Scoops

My wife often accuse me of getting a little too focused on a subject. Lately it's been scoops.

I've made a lot of scoops lately, with over ten different types (and some with multiple designs). Some have been for my own enjoyment to learn about making them, and some have bene about making a new product.

My aim with a lot of what I make is to create something a hypothetical grandad would look at and say "that's solid, it'll last." And that's where I've gone with these wood and metal scoops.

Using some old 1.2mm galvanised sheets and my dads workshop I have created some good old fashioned scoops. The steel is folded to shape on a press break. then I make up the wooden section, morticing in the handle to the back piece for extra strength.

I'm really pleased with how these have turned out. solidly built and I'm happy to put my brand on them. I'm going to make them up in small batches. I have a few sizes, one triangular one, ideal for filling pots, this 4" (100mm) one ideal for most tasks and a bigger 6" (150mm) one for the faster workers out there. That said I've already had a custom order for an 8" (200mm) one for a replacement dustpan.

I'm hopeful these will complement my potting trays and be a product people will seek out!

What do you think? Could you do with a solid scoop like this?

  1. They are fabulous! I love the simple, clean lines and sturdiness.
Who couldn't do with a scoop like that? Well done!

    1. Thanks, I'm trying to keep these simple, I want to create products that people will look back on and think it was well made.

  2. I guess I don't do much scooping as the only one I have is a dustpan/mini shovel one with a metal part and a wood handle. I grab it rarely for other things but mostly it lives to scoop up sawdust on my garage floor. Back when I was living on the farm though, a scoop like the one on this post would be very handy for doling out the morning feed rations for the various critters.

    1. Yeah I always use a scoop for feeding the chickens, and although I have one good old plastic one I got about 15 years ago, every other one since then has been utter rubbish (that one still survives though).
