Make A Grain Scoop From A Log

My mate had some Lime trees that needed some large branches thinning out. When they were doing the work he said I could have what I wanted.

To start with I took a log about 16inches long. It's been sat outside my workshop for about 2 months now, and I know I wanted to make some scoops from it!

Yesterday was the day to make a start. I grabbed my maul and split it down.

Splitting it into quarters seemed like the right way to start. I wanted to make a big useful scoop. I'm not talking about something finely crafted for Instagram. I'm talking something that can scoop plenty of grain or chicken feed. Practical items.

It took about an hour start to finish, using 5 tools.

I'm sure they would have done much the same in the past when they needed something like this. The video above shows me making it step by step. Lime is a great wood for this as it cuts easy and dries quite light.

I'm hopeful it won't split as it dries but we'll have to wait and see on that one!

  1. I have never worked with lime wood but I do have plans to make some wooden stirring spoons out of some of my scrap firewood laying around. I do need to find a good draw knife though as I don't have one of those.

    1. A draw knife is a tool I come to again and again, always so handy, especially when fitting handles and the like.

  2. Much more handsome than my repurposed metal soup can! Well done!

    1. I like the soup can as well! We used to have a saucepan for the sheep!
