Makita DUC353 Cordless Chainsaw Review

I've had my cordless Makita chainsaw for over a year now and thought it was time to review it. I recorded a video back in January but after using a Sthil Cordless chainsaw I had to re-evaluate what I thought about it!

Check out the video below to see what I think about it. A great tool for the smallholding or homestead, but only good for smaller stuff - currently, technology seems to be moving at a pace!

Have you got a cordless chainsaw? What are your thoughts on them?

  1. Although I have an old gas powered Stihl, my father has an electric version like yours down on the farm, along with a gas powered one for heavy duty uses. I really liked the battery powered version and have used it a lot. I think it is perfect for my needs here next to town on my few acres and when I replace mine, it will be what I will get. It even has its place on the farm too but it does have it's downsides. The biggest one is when we cut sprouts of locust trees (with thorns) from our fields. For some reason deer like to eat their seed pods and poop them out in places where we drive tractors with soft rubber tires. Those sprouts are often growing in grassy areas. Due to the power limitations and the speed of the chain, sticking the tip of the electric chainsaw down into the dry grass to clip off the sprout below the first thorn guarantees the grass will bunch up between the blade and the guards and stall the saw out. We then have to stop, remove the guards and clean it out. We never have the problem with the gas powered one.

  2. Been using chainsaws since I was a kid. My favorite saw was the first one my dad gave me a 14" bar JonsenRed that is 10 years younger than I am and still going today. I have used about every type of saw including corded electric for pole saws and the battery ones when they first came out over 10 years ago and now a little 4 inch hand held mini battery saw. Almost every one of them has had a use. When ever I have an over grown fence line to cut I go straight for the battery operated ones as they are much safer and easier to use around wire but harder to use one handed than the new mini's. I am amazed at how well the technology is keeping up since the old NICad days too.
