Gleaning The Materials For Laying a New Hedge

So with a 45m (ish) stretch of hedge to lay I needed to get started with finding the materials to do it.

Being a tight smallholder I didn't want to buy anything for this job, which was already going to cost me a lot of labour, I wanted to find the materials on the smallholding.

The hedge repair I did a few weeks back had started to provide me with some items, around 50 of the 80 or so hedging stakes I needed. I also needed to find binders and prep the hedge ready of laying, this involved the worst bit - Removing the tree guards! What a horrible job and one that brings it's own level of guilt with the plastic waste.

Watch the video above and let me know what materials you harvest and manage from your own plots?

  1. We share our resourcefulness Kev. I like to recycle materials and I am always looking in skips, propagating hedging, shrubs and perennials.

    1. It's been years since I've been in a skip! Just don't see them around here at the moment! I guess hardly ever leaving the smallholding is part of that though!

  2. We reuse loads of items inside and out, sourcing on local free pages on Facebook, and passing things on. Are the tree protectors reusable, can you pass them on, they did their work for you well.

    1. The tree protectors all seem to have gone really brittle, so tend to snap easily.

  3. Really enjoying your hedge vids, Kev. A pleasure to watch as you make it look easy, knowing full well the skill and work it actually takes. Looking forward for more.

    1. Ah thank you! I have a new one out tomorrow where I lay the hedge I planted 9 years ago. Something I've been looking forward to!
