Worlds Biggest Bread Bin - Making Christmas Presents

My mate has been on about building a bread bin for the last, oh I don't know, four years...

Every time I hint at some available time in my workload he asks if his bread bin is on my list of things to make! It's become a bit of a running joke between us.

The trouble was it was always huge. So it always put me off, the kind of job I know there's no money in making and would take too long to just do as a quick job.

So in a particularly weak moment the week before Christmas I decided to make it for them. The thing really is a monster - 560mm wide, 400mm deep and 275mm high.

I made the base out of some good quality 18mm birch ply. I rebated and glued the corners and then rebated in some 6mm birch ply into the back.

The idea behind the door is that it folds down and becomes the bread board. I made it from some local ash I had in the shed, jointed together with biscuits. I inset some magnets into the board and into the top. If I was doing it again I'd probably put the magnets into end of the board so there was no chance of cutting into it, but it should work fine.

I made the handles by routing out some ash using a selection of router cutters. These then keep the board level when it's open. I also carved the word BREAD onto the front so it didn't look like too much of a random box on their side!

I knew it was a success as a present as on Christmas morning they both, separately, sent me a photo of the bread bin in situ! It's made to house their microwave on top, so does double duty.

Funny as I thought that a bread bin this size would be unpopular for anyone else, but the first person I showed it to (another friend) said how they hated their tiny bread bin and how much they'd love a bigger one.

Makes me wonder if they'd be worth making to sell. I might list one on Etsy with a longer lead time, so they can be made to order.

Who else would want a bread bin this big?

  1. To big for us, but we don't eat too much bread, but it does work very well under the microwave.

    1. Yeah, when we used to have one it was where bread went to die!

  2. Looks good Kev. But I did notice that your friends have an awful lot of 'stuff' on top of their microwave, hope it's not blocking any vents that are needed when it's in use!

    1. It's all on a tray and the vents are at the back!

  3. Very clever to make beautiful breadbox that doubles as a microwave stand! Even if it wasn't used as a breadbox, it would be very useful for storing microwave cooking items.

  4. I converted the bin measure to Imperial. Gosh! That is one massive bread bin. Looks mouseproof too. It would be great for any kind of storage box Kev.

    1. It's a monster isn't it! When he gave the measurements I thought he was joking. Even when I dropped it off I looked at where it was to go and still thought it was too big!

  5. It looks great Kev - And yes, the stand functionality makes it useful. We are always looking for additional storage/space on the countertop.

    1. Yeah, it's great way to gain storage in the kitchen. Also great not to have to look for a bread board as well!
