Willow Wands As Party Favours

Our boy had a birthday party on Sunday. It was pretty full on, a whole class of 6 and 7 year olds!

He wanted it magic themed (I'll share the cake soon) and so we decided to make some willow wands to give to everyone in their party bags.

Years ago we used a local weaver to make some for the bags, but now we have enough willow growing to have a go at making them ourselves.

The willow we used wasn't ideal as it's just hybrid willow grown for firewood. So it does break and snap a bit easier than we'd like, but it didn't take us long to start making some fairly okay star shaped wands!

We could have done with some thinner whippier growth.

All three of the children managed to make them and before long we had 25 made up and ready to give away.

So it saves having to buy a bit of plastic tat for the party bags and also if anyone decides to they could plant their wand and it would still grow! It was nice for the children to be involved in making something for the party as well.

Anyone else make things for the party bags?

  1. Grandsons birthday was the theme of the film UP, and daughter popped a tennis ball in each bag, much nicer than anything plastic.

    1. Thanks! I'm sure it's been done many times before!

  3. We like they could be planted and grow on somewhere else once the day is over - a growing memory.

    1. Yeah I liked that side of it as well. We're going to plant a few hundred at the family farm this year to grow a screen for a new barn they're building.
