Winter salads bed growing slowly in the greenhouse. Pak choi, lambs lettuce, spring onions, rockets, might be all in a bit late (although have a bit of growth behind them), but we'll see how they do.
I've also put some in the polytunnel as well. Even if they don't do well this winter they should romp away come early spring (if I can keep the slugs off them until then).
How is everyone doing with winter greens?
I've got some kale and turnips and something else in cells in the polyhouse. In the polytunnel I've planted some spring cabbage Durham Early which seem to be surviving. Have you got your garlic or onions in? Garlic in here and bed prep started for onions but not in yet....
ReplyDeleteWe have some kale in the garden. I tried spring cabbage but none of it seems to have survived. Such a shame as I love seeing it grow all year.
DeleteLooking good, I've only managed to do pak choi, perpetual spinach and Swiss Chard, but they are doing well in the leaking unheated greenhouse. Hoping to get some more seeds in today then they will be at the mercy of my husband as I should be getting a new knee tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like you're doing well with it all! Hope the operation goes well!
DeleteLast pick of greens washed and residing in the fridge, a little frost singed, but being savoured...as that is it! We are snow covered now. This is the longest I've been able to grow stuff into the fall. Usually we have a hard frost before September is finished.
ReplyDeleteThis is late for frosts here as well. does stuff sit well for you over winter?
DeleteWe have a cool room that we can keep around 3C with the outside banked up with snow, for root crops. Hoping to build a root cellar next summer. Serious thinking here about how to extend the growing season on both ends, as green veg are shipped up from California throughout the winter, are very expensive, more so now, leave a large carbon footprint...and who knows how they were grown?
DeleteHave you read "the Winter Harvest Handbook" by Elliot coleman? That's pretty good and might have a few things relevant to where you live. I know some places do double covering of plastic. So have a polytunnel/hoop house. then inside they have smaller tunnels again. this helps retain heat and stops so much temperature fluctuation. Might be worth looking at.
DeleteI'd love a root cellar here, but the water table is just so high it would take soem serious engineering. If I ever won the Lottery (which I don't do) I'd build one though and make sure it wasn't a pond in winter!
Thanks, will hunt it up.
DeleteThat'll be quite a treat through the colder months. We have kale, Swiss chard, broccoli and cabbage growing outside. No greenhouse here. So far, so good!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm looking forward to stealing a few meals out of the garden for the coming few months.
DeleteWe hope to get started this weekend, but we have a lot of clearing to do first.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you going to put in? Stuff you've already started?
DeleteI forgot to plant my potatoes so they would be ready at or around Christmas in the polytunnel.
ReplyDeleteThat's something I say I'm going to do every year and never do! What crop is in before the potatoes.
