No MiLK TODAY - A Channel You Really Have To Watch!

Hugh from English Country Life recommended a channel to me the other day and I have to say I'm completely hooked.

It's about a guy who is going to try to be self sufficient for a year just living on what he can produce on his smallholding. He's allowing himself tap water and salt, not much (although I can't completely get why he is having salt!)!

This has always been a dream of mine to attempt it someday so I'm really looking forward to how it turns out.

His smallholding is a small vineyard so no doubt he'll have plenty to drink, he also has a house cow, pigs, chickens and turkeys, a polytunnel and a good sized veggie garden. he's also ploughed around the vineyard to create areas to sow his grains.

The videos are beautifully produced, and done better than anything I've seen on TV lately (you can instantly tell he's from that world). Each episode has heart, humour and knowledge in there.

I binge watched all the episodes he has out at the moment in one night, something I very rarely do, but I was hooked and now can't wait for the next one.

I have a feeling this channel will go huge, it feels like this is what River Cottage wanted to be and never quite got there (later ones anyway). He only has 500 subscribers at the moment so go over and watch his videos, subscribe and say I sent you!

  1. Hope he writes a book - maybe you could write it for him!

    1. If he writes as good as he speaks on here it would be a great book!

  2. Thanks for this, Kev. Interesting that he's just gotten started, so we can follow along in "real" time (no spoilers!) Documenting on YouTube will certainly challenge him to not give up.

It reminds me somewhat of the book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. A little different in that they challenged themselves to a year of eating only local foods, which expanded their resources beyond their own farm. It was a very interesting read.

    1. Sounds like he's been living the lifestyle for quite some time, but really stepping it up a gear. I'm looking foward to seeing how he does.
I've read the book you mention and I did like it, but funnily found it a little hard going. There's a great one by John Lewis Stempel called "The Wild Life" Which is really good and he tries to live off wild food or what he produces.

  4. I have just learnt I can cast on to my TV from the laptop! I will be watching as there is never anything on TV. Kev, could you show what you are doing for bird flu protection this year please. I am thinking to keep the girls safe I need to really fortify this year over the last few years set ups. Thanks (hope you are all well)

    1. I've just had some clear tarps delivered and I'm going to put them on my triangular runs this week instead of the mesh. But more because the pens get so wet and boggy. Managed to do one pen today in-between rain showers and hope I can do the rest tomorrow.

    2. I have a thermal tarp on the roof of the enclosure and I have bought some tarps for the sides. they arent clear clear, they are like squares sewn in. I dont know how it is going to go as it is so windy here. I have been looking for a plastic greenhouse, but those panels pop off all the time and the birds will be off and taken by a predator.
