Natural Apple Storage Tips!

If you've followed this blog for a while you'll no doubt know that I'm slightly obsessed with apples. I'm not quite University challenge level, but I do like to think of them as a subject I know a fair bit about.

I also love this time of year, harvesting them from trees I planted is just a dream. It's also lovely as I get to harvest them with my children who are also obsessed with fruit (but more about eating it!).

A question I get asked a lot is about apple storage and how I get my apples to keep for so long. Especially when I tell people I can get them to store until June some years.

There are a few key things I do and I decided to put them in a video on YouTube (as I seem to be a on a YouTube making binge at the moment).

But the basics are to pick the fruit ripe, to store the right varieties of apple, to pick perfect fruit, have good storage and inspect it lots of time when it's stored. The other thing I didn't mention in the video is to store more than you need, that way you will always get some that lasts longer!

If you watch the video let me know what you think.

What are your key tips for storing apples?

Can you get an apple to store until June?

  1. My mum always wrapped apples in newspaper and stored in cardboard boxes, only one layer high. She kept them under her bed, they too lasted for ages.

    1. I think that wiould depend on the temperature of your house a bit more, generally people have them a bit warmer than they did in those days, but I can see how that would work well. Also think how valuable they would have been compared to our (still) cheap food we have these days.
