Passionate Young Cook

Each month we get our Middlest a cooking magazine. She's very passionate about it so it's great to feed into that passion just a little bit.

When this months issue turned up she was so excited as it had a free spice packet with it and a recipe to use it on.
Well that was it - we were going to have to cook it! So she looked at the ingredients, figured out what we had and didn't have then went shopping with her mum to pick up the other bits and pieces.

Then on Saturday night she donned her apron (which she made) and we cooked tea together, following a new recipe. We made a few recipe substitutions (fresh tomatoes instead of tinned, Vietnamese coriander instead of regular) and got tea cooked on time.

She got involved in every bit. I had to pop outside for a few things and she even kept frying the meat and then transferred them herself to the curry sauce we had made.

I loved seeing her face as she watched her brother and sister try it and then eat it. I also love that they'll eat what was a relatively spicy curry.
It's funny really as for a long time Middlest would never eat curry when we had it. I'd still cook it once a week and each time I'd always put some on her plate, she'd just eat the rice, no option of anything else. Then one day she just started eating it, now she loves it, in fact they all do. If, on the rare occasion, we go out for an Indian we can order pretty much anything off the menu and know they'll try it.

So a successful tea and a happy young lady.

What was your first meal you cooked for your family?

  1. Brilliant! Isn't it wonderful when they find their passion at such a young age. Job well done.

  4. It was my experience that when my daughter Annie was interested and helped prepare a meal, or cooked a dish she was far more willing try new foods. You must be so proud of her!

    1. I'll be fair to my middlest the last few years she tries everything and then even if she doesn't like it she'll try it the next time we have it. She must have tried olives 50 times now - she really doesn't like that we all like them and she doesn't.

  5. Oh, I wish every child would be allowed to experience the joy of 'creating'. It builds confidence.

    1. It really does. Something we try to do at scouts as well. She was so proud as we dished this up.
