Fitting Sweet Chestnut Palings

I managed to find a bit of time to fit the palings I ordered from Say It With Wood back in the winter.

I was so impressed with them. Generally I hate buying anything I can make, especially when it's wood, but there's no way I could make these! I don't have the machinery for a start, but when I saw how well these were made, cleft and smoothed up I was so impressed. A lot of hand work goes into these palings.

Fitting them is certainly not easy on your own. It involved lots of bit of string to hold it. I could have done with a hand really, but with a bit of thinking I got it fitted!

I had to hook the trees out the way, using ratchet straps and bailer twine.

The one lot of palings were 6ft high - pretty imposing but they hide the greenhouses just the right amount.

The rest is 3'6" high.

I'm really pleased with how it looks.

I think it really finishes the garden off nicely. Especially with the rose arch and the gate.

I have enough fencing to do around the compost area which has gone a bit wild lately, I think the digger needs to get in there and give me a fresh slate to work with.

What do you think? Do you like the rustic style or is it not to your taste? What would be your dream fencing?

  1. I prefer rustic to the modern neat lines and hardly no plants garden, it suits your plot and looks good.

  2. Well I like it. I saw a really great fence yesterday, all reclaimed wood of different sizes, but painted with a wash of paint to give a driftwood appearance. Much, much nicer than it sounds. Your chestnut palins suit your garden very well.

    1. Thank you! I love anything like you've described. I'm much more into natural lines in the garden than hard edges.
