Day two of the course was far easier than day one!
Day two was to use the materials we'd prepped to make some baskets!I'm not going to describe the process here as whole books have been written on the subject, but I'll share some pictures from the day
I loved how these baskets started to come together. There was also quite a few little tricks to hide any mistakes or anything that went slightly wrong (wood splitting where it shouldn't).
So in all it was a really rewarding weekend. Some lovely people on the course, nice food (and a cafe near by to buy cake from), interesting location (a CSA doing 100 veg boxes a week!) and a new way of looking at a material I often use. It was physically demanding though (not sure I could have taken mum with her carpal tunnel), but I guess that makes the finished product all the sweeter as you know the effort that went into it.
Fabulous. Would it be strong enough to make big log baskets? We love the setting you are working in too.
ReplyDeleteIt's very strong, I'm not sure how it acts as it gets bigger though. Be worth an experiment I'm sure!
Deletei love baskets and have always wanted to learn how to make them. the little ones made from pine needles and such are so beautiful. i really like the ones you made. will you teach the kids how to make them now?
ReplyDeleteMy plan was to do that, Although it is hard work to get the materials. If I can find an Ash log the right size and shape then yes I think I will.
DeleteWell done. They would make great Christmas or wedding presents.
ReplyDeleteThey would! Although I'd hope my second one would be a bit tidier! If I can find an ash log I might try again and make some more.
DeleteLong ago in by and by, my wife sold handmade baskets. At one point I went back with her to the plant. We went through the entire process, from preparing the logs to weaving the baskets (somewhere, there is basket we made). Looks good Kev!
ReplyDeleteThat's really great - do you have a link to the type of baskets she used to make? I should imagine she had strong hands, it's certainly not easy on them!
Deleteoh Kev this is fabulous
ReplyDeleteIt was a nice weekend together. We even got a hotel as well with a nice big breakfast!
