Sea Of Edible Greens In The Greenhouse

Sorry no posts for the last week or so - It's been a bit mad but I have some really interesting posts coming up to make up for it (and to explain why I've been so busy!).

ButI thought I'd do a quick post on how much I'm loving my bed in the greenhouse at the moment.

It's become a beautiful sea of edible greens!

I sowed mizuna, rocket, spinach and some hearting lettuce (which aren't ready just yet) a while ago. They're all big enough to harvest now, so we've been eating lots of these beautifully dark green leaves.

The other night my wife asked the children what they're prefer for tea, chips, beans and egg or jacket potato, fresh salad and tuna - they picked the one with the salad!

The trick is now to keep these salads coming and make sure we have them year round! Something I'm not great at.

Once we've harvested enough from these this greenhouse bed will be used for growing melons then back to winter salads (possibly) after they have been harvested (with a top up of compost).

Also have started planted lots of things outside now as well. Still loads to do (like sort the  polytunnel out by moving the paths) but feels great to be harvesting something.

Who else is eating spring greens and salads already?

  1. Spectacular results. Keep it going. Grow your melons up wires and you might still be able to get salad crops in underneath.

    1. Yeah, I was thinking it needs something under them, even if just to stopt he soil drying out. Wonder if I can grow anything benifical to help them? Peas as a green manure?

  2. I have salad leaves, and there are flowers on my tomato plants, cucumber is coming along nicely, so soon be all home grown salads here.

    1. Thanks Dave - when you see my next series of posts you'll see why! I've been a busy carpenter!

  4. If you haven't yet, I'd recommend you explore the Kratky passive hydroponic system for lettuces. They love it and it is nothing more than a pan of water/nutrient and a plant. It is now the only way I grow lettuce anymore. Cheers!

    1. I've just googled it and it sounds interesting. Sounds like a good system, especially for someone like me. My worst thing is successional sowing!

  5. Not a fan of salad leaves, they're so flabby and uninteresting, I prefer sprouted seeds and microgreens

    1. I think rocket takes some beating for taste though. The boy loves his spinach, I do like the crunch of a good salad in a sandwich or wrap and my wife loves lots of salad leaves.

  6. Nice selection. We've been enjoying winter purslane, Swiss Chard, pak choi and various mixed salads all winter, as the plants get older I use them in stir-fries

    1. If it wasn't for the ducks I could have had so much more greens and salad this winter! This year I will be far better at making sure we have a long supply! Bet it's been lovely having all that to munch on!
