Damsons

I was lucky enough to be at my friends the other day and snuffle some damsons - one of my favourite fruits!

We all love their tart sweetness here so the kids were excited to eat some as well.

I did find my youngest with six little pots he'd found, putting two in each, to take them to school as his snack!

We had a big bag full so I was unsure the best way to preserve them. We already have quite a bit of canned fruit so I decided the dehydrator might be the way forward - I love these on my breakfast in the summer! Chewy, tart, sharp and yet sweet.

I filled the dehydrator with 3 trays of damsons and 3 trays of very tart cooking apples. Love this time of year but feel I need to be preserving something all the time to make the most of it!

What are you currently preserving?

    1. Ha for once I'd say ours is worse. I try not think about it too much and just keep preserving!

  2. Have made damson jam and damson gin - never occurred to me to dehydrate. Currently have bay leaves in my dehydrator, blackcurrants in the freezer ready to make blackcurrant vodka and the blackberry whisky is on the go. There's a pattern developing here! I have made cucumber relish with gifted cucumbers and marrow jam and chutney with gifted marrows. When the booze soaked fruit has done it's magic I shall make more jam with it!

    1. That sounds like some amazing preserves! I think they would taste awesome. I made some damson vodka once and it was lovely, but I'm not a huge spirits drinker.

  3. I count them into a pot, cook 'em, count the stones I skim off the top (and go looking for the rest) blitz the pulp with ripe bananas and dry it into fruit leather. Roll it up and slice it into pinwheels for kids lunch snacks.

    1. I never have the patients to count the stones! I know I'd get distracted and miscount!
