Homestead Maths

I put this on twitter the other day so apologies if you've seen it already.

This morning she was frustrated trying to figure out Greek gods from a poem and 16 pages of maths.

This afternoon building a chicken coop, marking up parallel lines, taking measurements &first time using the jigsaw on her own. Perfect apprentice.

I love how useful they've become and how they like to help. I can now set her to finish putting in screws or mark up timber to be cut. It's a lovely way to spend time together. Carpenters daughter.

  1. Tell her to forget about Greek gods - they never did anyone any favours anyway. Those skills she can learn from you will be infinitely more useful, building ways to learn any new skills. Memorizing Greek gods won't do that for you.

  2. I wish I'd learned all this stuff! Your kids are very lucky.

Speaking of school frustrations, I once read about a family who decided to homeschool but their teen boys hated it. So the parents said, 'okay, if you build an addition on to the house you don't have to have school.' The boys accepted and guess what - they had to learn just as much for the project as they would have in school! Their parents coined the term 'unschooling,' which is still a popular method today.

  3. I found that much of science and math was not interesting to me growing up because it was theoretical. When I founding out the practical uses for it, it suddenly became real.
