Panic Buying - Compost!

While the rest of the world seemed to be panic buying toilet rolls I decided to go and get my compost for the season.

I've been trying to go peat free for some time now so it seemed idea to get some from fertile fibres and try it out.

Luckily it's not far from where I live and the staff were super friendly. I'm really looking forward to seeing how well it does for me in this season.

The boy loved it as there was this rather striking parrot at the farm where they were based as well as a peacock and cows! A little boys heaven!

I'm hoping this will be fairly consistent and predictable! I'll let you know in a couple of months time when hopefully everything is growing well.

What compost are you using this year? Do you buy much in?

  1. Fertile Fibers, interesting.
I hesitate to ask as a person gets tired of hearing about it......but having lived in the UK for 18mos years ago I feel a certain affinity for the country, especially as I would love to return one day; How is the UK responding to this Covid 19? Affecting you much?

    1. I think it's what we would call "an interesting time". Not sure what to think at the moment. Ideally I'd like to keep my kids off school but my wife is a teacher and while she is working it's pointless. I can see the reasoning for keeping them open as if they close them then grandparents will likely have to do childcare, this then mixes the two groups that you want to keep seperate. But on the whole I'd say the country doesn't feel good about the way it's being handled. The messages we're receiving are mixed. "don't got to pubs or theatres" but they're not saying to shut them either so insurance companies don't have to pay out.
If we lock down here we'll be fine but we're in a difference situation to most. I have a good mate who is a single parent, no idea how he is expected to look after his daughter and work if the schools shut and he works with old people.

  2. Three 4o litre bags from Lidl for 6 Euros. I buy at least 6 bags of compost a week at the moment. It's peat based but very cheap and OK for potting on and seed sowing.

    1. Yeah, I'm always tempted by the cheap stuff! Keep meaning to try the council own made product.

  3. I produce most of my own but I do buy 2 to 3 bags of Jack's Magic for initial sowing most years.

    1. I make lots, but for seed sowing I'd never use my own, just becuase without testing I don't really know what's in it nutrient wise.

  4. Well done Kev! There are more important things than loo paper. Anyway, what's that all about, I gather CV doesn't give you the runs so why all the loo paper? Anyway, keep on potting!
