Working Three Days in Wales

It's been many years since I've stayed away for work (this is the only other time I can think of), but mum had booked a workmate Richard (who everyone calls Dill) and me in to do some work on their cottage in Wales.

She had been trying to use local trades but kept getting let down time after time so decided if she got us into crash out the bulk of the work that might be the way to go.

The plan for the work is to split the current bathroom into two as there is only one toilet in the house. This means that the old bathroom had to go, along with the large airing cupboard, a window needed replacing and making smaller, a roof light added and walls built.

Scaffold up! This let us take out the window and get all the rubbish out that way. Luckily by thsi time it had stopped raining!

Beginning the rip out. the cupboard was huge! We even found a skin magazine hidden behind the water tank!

The roof light went really well. Been a few years since I've done one but Dill had done quite a few recently so it went it really easily.

All the rafters were doubled up to take the new roof light.

Finished job. Luckily we didn't need any other slates!

Stud work in.

I didn't take any pictures at the end! but we had this boarded and a small stud wall up at the end of the bath as the wall was so out of square.

I'm not sure if I have to go back to hand the doors and stuff in a few weeks. The while job went really well and I was impressed with how much we got done between us. A few late evenings working but mum certainly kept us well fed!

  1. That is very impressive work, the skylight for the roof, and all the interior work. My husband liked to do that kind of work. Well done.

    1. It's good fun when you get into it. Both Dill and I have been bren working in the building trade for 20 years so know what we're doing and have complimentary skills. We've done a few roofs together.
