Pantry Build - Part 1 - Rip Out

Now hand on heart I can honestly say I haven't finished all the other jobs in the house. There's a lot of painting to do, but everything else is pretty much there. Painting can be done on wet horrible days and with a few hours here and there

For seven years this was it for a kitchen, seems so tiny now.

So as the weather is good and I'm at a point with my paying work where I can take a short break from it, I decided to look at making a start with the new pantry area

This is to be a walk in pantry (accessed from the kitchen), a dividing wall and a galley utility room the other side. Then the old pantry will get converted to a downstairs toilet.

I took great pleasure in ripping out the old kitchen. I can't believe that we cooked in there, from scratch, for seven years. Check out this blog post from a few years ago as a tour of it! Now we have a bigger kitchen I can't even imagine how we did it. Especially with all the preserving I do and the fact that the children like to help with everything! The new kitchen certain has made life easier.

Washing machine needs to stay while the work continues as we have nowhere else to put it!

It was great to properly see the size space we've got to work with. But plenty of work to go in there.

The next bit is to sheet up all the door ways and start to properly strip the room out. So plaster off the walls (the ceiling is already down), floor ripped up and doorway knocked through to the new kitchen.

Then I can start to look at blocking up the window and building a wall to divide the spaces up. The pantry side will be heavily insulated and vented to the outside world.

What do you think? Would you like a walk in pantry or do you already have one?

  1. Hi Kev

That is going to be a nice sized pantry. It will be bigger than my current one which although not big stores a lot of preserves and goodies as I like preserving too. Am therefore deeply jealous but you need all the space that you can get. I have also converted the understairs into a jam/bottle pantry but ideally I would have a larger space like yours. You have to work with what you have though. I have discovered that I need more jar space in any case as I now have a canner and I need to store my dehydrated bits and bobs as well. I think if you preserve its a bit like topsy and it grows and grows. I also quite fancy a cold room as well. Piccalilli is next for making on my list. Look forward to the update on this very useful new project of yours. Are you aiming to have it ready quickly or will it be an on the go project. Perhaps I am old fashioned but every home needs a large pantry space. Pattypan

    1. Not sure how quickly this will be ready. I'd like the pantry to be sorted quite quickly but with the utility as well it might take a while along with the other jobs I have running for other people.

    2. Ah time that very rare commodity. At least it is going to be a lovely big space. Are you going to put the traditional cold slabs in as well. I think that they could be so useful still.

    1. Yeah, this one was tiny to cook in. Dishing meals up was the hardest. There was never enough counter space. I'm not sad to see it go.

  3. I'd love a walk in pantry, as I try to preserve seasonal food from our allotment, when I can. Also I like to stock up at times such as now, with Brexit looming and no idea how it's going to affect food prices. I look forward to following your progress.

    1. Yeah, stocking up hasn't looked so good for a long time! I always keep a certain level as that's the type of person I am! This level might seem mad to other people! Can't wait to haev all my food organised though! That'll be great!

  4. So jealous. I would love a walk in pantry but do enjoy our little 'under the stairs' pantry that we did a while ago.

    1. Our smaller one has been great but as I like to keep such a stock of things it's always full to bursting! Be great to have it all organised so I can rotate it properly.

  5. Getting started on a kitchen is always so exciting! The good thing about living with the old one for so long is that you really know what changes need to be made and why. I love my walk-in pantry, especially since I can so much. I can't wait to see your kitchen taking shape!

    1. This will be the last bit to the kitchen and should be a great way to finish it off. Can't wait to have it all organised in there. A good excuse to buy lots of large jars!

    1. Not sure about the can dispenser, it doesn't hold enough for me these days. I can use a tray of tinned tomatoes in a week in the winter! These kids have some big appetites!
