Infrastructure Work - Security Gate

Last year I did some work for someone and as part of the deal I got to take away some security gates before the place was demolished. I had no idea what I'd do with the gates at the time but I knew they'd be handy somewhere!

Removing the gates and cutting off the posts. Major downside was I killed my generator in the process! Doh!
It was only when I installed the field gates the other day that I realised it made the place feel much more cut off and safer for the children. I decided that one more gate by the workshop would mean that to get into our area of play/work you'd need to either open or climb a gate.

The opening from the workshop to the front of the house. Old doors from a job to be cut up for the fire!
The gates I had taken were just the right size and heavy duty enough to work for what I wanted. Dad welded some more length to the posts. I dug a deep hole and mixed up some concrete.

I needed a friend to help lift them in though, these gates are not a one man lift!

It feels so much nicer with them in and has created a kind of courtyard area by my workshop. Whilst doing this I also decided to clear a pile of rubble from building works last summer. My children have been great and won't play on the pile, but when they have friends round I find myself telling them constantly as mine seem to live happily with all the risks here but I'm worried when it comes to other children!

If you want to know what adoration is then spend the afternoon in a digger with your three year old son watching you!

Breaking doors down for firewood
We also cut up some things for firewood. My seven year old daughter spent the afternoon breaking down a load of doors so we could use them for firewood this winter. A job I never seem to get round to and one that gave her a huge sense of satisfaction and worth.

Very slowly I'm working my way through a list of jobs for this place. It's amazing when I look round and see all the jobs we've done over the last seven years. I don't think we'll ever be finished though!

  1. What a great way to obtain the gates. And what a wonderful difference they make. And I know what you mean about feeling like you'll never be finished! That's why a blog is such a help. It's a wonderful journal of ideas and progress.

    1. I love looking back at it sometimes. It's great to see all the changes and I love seeing how much the kids have grown up and changed over the years. Scary how fast time has gone!

  2. My 2 year old grandson spent a whole day watching the diggers next door, they love them. It's always great to tick something off the never ending list.

    1. My boy loves diggers and tractors, they so easily fall into this stereotype! HE'd run down the garden when I'd drive the dumper that way then run back when I came back up.
The list never gets any shorter but I do feel that I'm making progress.

  3. Love the gate Kev. We have recently added a fence to the side of the house and we now have a sun trap area, that has the old hedge on one side and the new fence on the other. The area was previously just open and wasted as you couldnt sit out there as people can see from the street, they would wave at you come up and you couldnt get anything done. Now we can eat there and I have a little potting table for my plants as the hedge stops some of the winds from hitting you full force. The gate will change the area completely and will give you a clear defined "keep out". Great job!

    1. This really will stop anyone "mooching around". they have to make a decision to come in now (and there is a big lock). I'm tempted now with this area to get some big planters and get some big herb beds growing, just to soften the area from the kitchen window.
I love a private area and yours sounds great. I remember our last garden I blocked up the back fence and the neigbour behind was gutted as we couldn't chat, trouble was I'd get nothing done as he was quite the talker!

    2. The planters sound ace. And anything to add more plants. I cant stand it when people talk for too long they can see you are doing things when they come over. I think it is just them being nosy! I just want to get on and do my bits. I have a problem when I am in the front garden where we have cut lots of the diseased trees down everyone is super interested in what we are doing and talk about it at length in the pub! ha ha a lady at the WI told me they were planning on what we should do with it!?! Mind your own business! haha

  4. What is the old saying that good fences make good neighbors? And good gates can serve many good purposes, too! Love the look of yours already. With a little landscaping it will be a lovely garden. And everyone deserves a bit of privacy.

  5. A job well done there with the gate. It sounds like your three year old would enjoy a trip to Diggerland. I didn't know there was such a place till I hired an electric car on holiday last year which was pick up from Diggerland Devon. It looks like they had diggers for all ages and you can dig for treasure etc. Unfortunately it wasn't open when I was there (school holidays and bankholidays only I think), but it did look like fun for all ages (if you like digging machines!)
