Walking The school Run

Now things are starting to dry up we're going to try walking the school run down the footpaths when we can. The road by us is just not very safe for walking with little ones.

The boy is just old enough now so I don't have to carry him the whole way, although he's not as fast as the girls (he only has little legs). It's just under a mile each way and the only bit of tarmac we touch is to cross the road from school.
It's great fun to do some plant spotting and have the girls ask me questions about what they see. Although today I was having to answer questions about pilewort...

  1. I can't think of many kids in this country that would have such an enjoyable walk to school.

    1. We feel pretty lucky living here and the school they get to use. It's a lovely walk in when the fields are dry, otherwise it's a mud bath!

  2. What a delightful way to walk to school! I sincerely doubt most kids here in the U.S. could manage a mile walk one way. (How sad is that?)

    I had no idea what "pilewort" was and had to look it up. Hee-hee, I would have liked to have heard their daddy explaining that one! :o}

    2. "It's for sore bums"
      "well how did they use it?"
      "Erm.... they could make a paste and rub it on, or..."
      "or what?"
      "they might, nahh, they make a paste...!"

  3. I had no idea what it was either. I do love your foot path. What a lovely way for the children to walk to school:)

  4. What a truly delightful way to get to school. You have made me think about walking with my boys to school down our was-railway now cycle path. They are provided with a school taxi service along with other children due to the rural and spread out nature of where we live but it wouldn't hurt to try.

  5. We were one of the few parents to walk DS to school. 1st school was 1 mile each way, Junior school 2 miles each way. Great for them.
