Capping Fence Posts

Ever since I put the fence posts in with my dad a few years ago he's been on at me to cap the tops of the larger telegraph poles that we used as gate and corner posts.

I know he's right on this one, left they start to rot from the middle out as the preservative is near the outside of the post.

Around the same time I saved a load of lead from a roof I was repairing to do the job, but never got round to using it!

This weekend I finally managed to get the job done. Pretty simple and it didn't take long, I just cut out some circles of lead with snips, bashed it round the top of the posts and fixed it in place using a few copper nails.

Some good recycling and a job that should save me a lot of time in the future! They look quite smart with their caps on as well, although I don't think I'm going to win lead worker of Britain anytime soon!

Anyone else cap their fence posts or thinks they should?

  1. You can also paint the post tops with tar every few years.

    1. Yeah that would work. I know what I'm like though and I'd never get round to it!

  2. I cap mine with the old clay pots that were used here for Pine Resin collection. Unlike Flower pots they have no hole at the bottom, and work fine.

    1. The thought had crossed my mind! Maybe I should have used some old tin instead of lead!
