Handmade Presents

A little late on posting this one but I thought I'd share with you some gifts I made as Christmas presents this year.
These are some little wooden Christmas tree decorations I turned on the lathe out of some beautiful pear wood from a friends stack of wood (it had been drying at his for years).
I haven't been on the lathe much since moving here except for occasional repair jobs on chairs and the like, I just haven't had the time to turn much for pleasure lately. It used to be something that I really enjoyed doing, I had two years worth of regular lessons (where I was the youngest by about 30 years) and a great teacher, I was really pleased that I hadn't forgotten it all, as although I work with wood a lot turning is a trade/ skill by itself.

I gave out the decorations in sets of two or three and made six sets - you'd be surprised at how long these little blighters took to turn!

Anyone else enjoy wood turning?

What turned wooden item would you make for your homestead?

  8. You can't beat a bit of wood. The funny looks I have had for saying that. I love wood. My husband is very good with his hands and wood (seriously this isn't meant to sounds as dodgy as it is turning out to) and has recently made a wine rack, animals housing and so on. He doesn't do delicate items like yours which are amazing. I hope you put them in your Etsy shop?

  10. My Lovely Hubby is just in the process of kitting out his workshop and turning is one of the things he is most looking forward to ... I doubt he'll be anywhere near as proficient as you for a while though ;-)

    Those trees are lovely gifts.

  12. My father in law had a lathe but hardly used it. I have a "seam presser" that he made for me. I don't use it much because it is a little over sized but I treasure it.
I love your trees, I am sure they will be well loved and appreciated over the years.

  16. MY husband loves to turn wood, but illness has made it a thing of the past. He used to make all sorts, but the most popular were spherical bird nests; spinning tops; candlesticks and beautiful boxes and dishes. He really is talented and like yourself very professional. Love Andie xxx
