Last night it was my daughters first parents evening. We all went as a family with our rag tag bunch of kids in tow.
I was really looking forward to it but there was a slight damper on the evening. Not my daughters reports (apparently she's a pleasure to teach, but I already knew that!) but what happened shortly before hand.
I pulled up on the road outside of school and started to get us all out the car. It was getting dark but I deliberately parked under a street light so we could all see. My wife got the girls out the passenger side onto the grass verge as I got my little boy out of the car from the passenger door on the drivers side.
I'd opened his door and reached inside to grab his coat, just as I unclipped him the there was a large bang and the car door rocked and there was a shower of plastic over the road.
It took me a few seconds to process what had happened. A car had passed our car and hit the door with their passenger side wing mirror and a bit of their car looking at the dents. I looked up and I could see their break lights come on. The boy then started crying from the shock so I bent back down to deal with him, looked back up and I could see they were driving off!
I looked at our car and could see they'd dented our door and only missed me by inches. I shut the door twice (as I think they've bent it as well) and handed the baby to my wife and got in to chase after them. Unfortunately another car got between us so I couldn't see where they went and lost them. Probably a good job in hind sight, I was fuming and although I have a good handle on my temper I was shaking at the time.
Luckily we weren't injured and it's only a few hundred pounds worth of damage, but the fact they didn't stop to apologise and check they hadn't hurt anyone really disgusted and angered me. I've reported it to the police, although I know there's nothing they can do, and tonight I'm going to park up at the same spot at the same time and see if they come by again. I want them to foot the bill and I want them to gain a few points on their licence.
That's awful Kev, it's just so lucky none of you were hurt. Some people are just plain nasty and completely irresponsible. They must have been able to see you were a family with kids.
ReplyDeleteLuckily nobody got hurt Kev. It must of been very frightening.
ReplyDeleteThat's unbelievable that they drove off not knowing if they'd injured someone. I can only wonder if it was a very young driver thst just panicked? Being so near a school are there cameras posted that may have recorded the car?
ReplyDeleteMaybe think about a dashboard camera although that may have stopped recording by then. Glad you were all okay.
ReplyDeleteso sorry kev! glad you and yours are safe though. my daughter and DIL's cars have both been sideswiped in the last couple weeks nd no one stopped for either of them. it's a crazy world out there.
ReplyDeleteHow horrible and unsettling for you. Presumably this was close to a school too-everyone should be driving carefully in the location. Does your village have a facebook page? It might be worth posting the info-someone might know something.
ReplyDeleteIt's horrible when this sort of thing happens. What is the matter with people these days. Probably uninsured. Do you belong to Facebook? Of so put it on there, you may get a response. A local put a photo of someone walking off with a package from her drive, they were recognised and the police hot involved. Pleased you're all OK.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad no one was hurt, and I understand your anger, there are some morons driving these days.
ReplyDeleteI hope you get them.
ReplyDeleteIts the realisation of the danger that makes you angry perhaps its just as well you didnt find them, but I do hope some-one comes forward with some info.
ReplyDeleteThat's really a frightening and very disgusting experience Kev... but glad that none of your family got physically hurt.
ReplyDeleteHow scary. Glad you're all safe.....and hope THEY get caught!
ReplyDeleteHas the school got cctv kev? I would have been livid too and so so thankful you hadn't started to get your boy out. Glad you're all ok even if shook up
ReplyDeletePs well done to your daughter on the report
ReplyDeleteYou were lucky it wasn't more serious. Probably someone with no insurance.
ReplyDeleteI cannot fathom some people's actions. Glad you are ok. Made me feel sick when I read what happened!
ReplyDeleteFrightening event Kev, thank god he did not clip you. Hope the repairs are not to costly.
ReplyDeleteThat was a close call! So glad it was only your car that got some damage but you and your family are safe.
