A Spot Of Clay Shooting

A large portion of my spring and summer was spent working on a building a hotel extension just outside the village.
This job was good as it was so close and there was a great crew of lads working there, one of the best I've worked with in a long time. The work was hard as we worked quite long days and I really put in a lot of effort to get my part (the carpentry) done as fast as possible.  I made some great friends and there was  real sense of camaraderie between our close nit group.
It's been a month since I've finished there (besides some evening work) so it was nice when Edd (the site manager, who also works on the tools as well) invited me to go clay shooting with the rest of the lads. My friends babysat the children and picked the eldest up from school whilst I went and busted some clays for the afternoon (thanks Brian and Sarah!)

It's been a while since I've had the gun out as I just haven't found time for it and I forgot how much I enjoy it. We split into small groups to go round all the different traps that simulate different types of game, I was with the experienced guns and we had a great time picking out the hard traps to make things difficult for us.

I have to admit my score wasn't amazing but it was great to be with a couple of more experienced guns so I could learn from them and I picked up some good tips.
It was also good to get a bit of practice in as I have a days game shooting booked in towards the end of November.
Anyone else enjoy clay shooting?

  1. Good job! My son (Navy man) taught me how to shoot and then my husband (who does not shoot but supports my interest) got me my first rifle. Last year I got my conceal carry license. But as yet I have not done any trap shooting, looks like grand fun.

    1. I'm pretty good with my air rifle but haven't had much to do with real rifles, I'll get my licence one day as I think it would be a good addition to help me with pest control.

  2. I'm not a good shot with a shotgun. I used to do a bit of 'rough shooting' which I enjoyed. Nowadays I prefer a .22 rifle.

    1. I like my .177 air rifle and it takes me a while to get back into shooting things that are moving.

  4. My husband belongs to the local French gun club, so 'does' the shooting range with his rifle. I don't know if they have clay pigeon shooting here, but I do know that the locals go out and shoot live pigeons, (wild boar too, plus deer in season.)

    1. The French seem to have great hunting culture as they love to know where their food comes from. I'd love to go on one of these shoots it's great when everyone is passionate about something.

  5. I'm a crack shot but have never shot a clay pigeon.

In fact I thinking of starting the 'Clay Pigeon Preservation Society' .... so many of them die needlessly at the hands of marksmen like yourself each year ;-)

  6. Used to love the rough shooting for about 35 years, but sold my guns and didn't renew my licence last time it was due.
Reason being my new wife is dead set against blood sports of any kind.

Shooting clays never appealed to me.

    1. He will, as soon as I fired the first few shots I turned to the others and said I'd forgotten how much I love it!

  9. Always important to have a bit of R&R when you work as hard as you do.

I had to leave my rifle behind when I left the UK as it was illegally owned (hypothetically of course ;) ) so now I've only got the air rifles out here with me. Still, always fun to get in a bit of target practice

    1. I had a wedding on Saturday as well so lots of R&R this weekend. Trouble is I might have had a little too much to drink and moving three packs of blocks onto the scaffolding is not the best hangover cure!

  10. I was addicted to sporting clays and five stand. We would shoot the five stand with the puller chosing the traps randomly so they were a surprise. Great fun and more exciting than the regular game. Work was slow so I was going at least three times a week and reloading nights.

  12. But, what if you got the chance to shoot at an indoor range in Miami, simply it will double the fun on your trip. Not all the gun ranges in have a gun shop attached to the range this the not the case with Miami Guns Inc.
