Minnesota Midget Melon

I harvested our first melon of the year yesterday - a little late!
I don't grow melons very often but I chucked these seeds in last minute, then didn't plant them on quick enough and in the end they got chucked in a planting bucket and left in the corner of the greenhouse.
For their neglect they've rewarded me with a few miniature melons. I could smell this one was ripe as soon as I went in the greenhouse.

They're only tiny, about the size of a cricket balls but the perfume coming from it is really strong.
the variety is bred to be small and early to ripen in a short season. I think this was probably a day or two over ripe but still really tasty, the girls ate it straight away, with big dribbles down chins!

I'll certainly be growing this type again and maybe even try them outside next year or under a row cover. I've saved the seeds so I'll probably be giving some away to friends and in the seed swap as well.

Do you grow melons? What variety do you grow?

    1. To be honest I think it was more by luck than judgement! Having the right variety helped though.

  2. Kev - i can smell that deelishous melon through the screen! i love melons! and have tried to grow a variety over the past few years with little success and i loooove melons! but we have finally learned our lesson and realized that it is just way to windy and rainy here for melons - they either blow away or go moldy too quickly. so this coming year, jambaloney will build another greenhouse and that's where we will grow all of our viney type things - cucs, zuchs and melons. cross your fingers for us. and enjoy those lovely little melons!

sending love (oh and i can just see the girls with melon juice running down their chins. sooo cute!). your friend,
    kymber

    1. I'm fairly sure I can send seeds over to you so if you want me to do a package of some I've saved jury let me know.I think you'd love cucamelons as well! Some musk melons and developed for outside growing even in your climate.

  3. We were successful with growing melons this year. They were quite small, though, like yours are, but they tasted delicious. I did save the seed but they have got lost. I think they were put in the pig's food by mistake!

    1. What type were they? I need to label things far better than I do!

  4. Where did you get the seed originally Kev? I have just Googled it but nothing has come up on English or Irish sites, it looks like the kind of melon we would love.
