Two Broken Preserving Jars

I've always looked at buying glass preserving jars as a long term investment, that's why I was disapointed on Monday when two of them seemed to break in the same place.
I was doing some baking and we keep a few items in La Parfait flip top jars. One after the other they both broke a small section of glass by the metal bit that opens the jars. The one put glass fragments into the food item so I had to chuck the whole jar full away.

Two wasted jars now.
I was wondering if this is a common occurrence or just a defect that I happened to have with two jars? We've got well over a dozen of these jars and it's the first time it's happened.

  2. Hi Kev

I have had it happen but usually in older jars - not newer ones. It is very frustrating when it does happen. However for the best part the plusses more than outweigh the minuses. I had Le Parfait jars originally but of late have been using the Kilner or Mason Jars. I tend to use the Le Parfait jars more for things like pickles these days.

  3. I have never used those jars as they are expensive here but just a guess is that there was a temperature change that may have involved the metal in some way. I used to have a lot of temperature change cracks in msson jars until I started heating everything to keep the temperature consistent over the whole jar and lid. If a crack goes around the jar it is usually temperature and if vertical it is a pressure issue.

  4. Probably a good reason to use screw on lid jars.

  5. It's never happened to me, but I have had lots of newer ones that the metal part has completely come apart and I've had to reassemble the jar using a pair of pliers to tighten things up.

  6. I don't know the answer to that, but I'll tell you this, if that's the worst thing that has happened to you lately, you're doing alright, Kev!

  7. I can only guess that there's more pressure put on the glass right at the point of the metal bit and that's what caused the glass to chip in that area. Frustrating, isn't it?

  8. I've never seen those jars for sale in my part of the US, I have the mason type jars with the screw-on lids. They do chip around the rims like that, but it seems to only happen to the older ones when I put them through the dishwasher on high heat. Poor things just give up after awhile.

  9. This is why I always use the other system with capsule lids and screw tops. I never trust those metal hinges, and I don't like the rubber rings.

  10. I'm a bit late to the party here :). The exact same chipping happened with one of my jars yesterday. I only have it a few months. Very disappointed.

    1. I've had it happen more times since then. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong. I buy the mason jars now with the screw lids. Seem a much better option.

    2. I'm late to this discussion also but it just happened on my 3rd jar and that's why I'm here because it's sounding like a problem.
