Declutter

So my wife and I live in a house that has quite a bit of clutter. We have a lot of stuff, not all of it useful stuff.
I guess we're both hoarders really, but after having a week away and not missing much of our stuff she's decided that it's time to try to reduce the number of things in our house.
I started to do this in my workshop last year, but then I lost interest and didn't get very far with it.

But today my wife has found 91 items to throw out or give to charity. that's 91 items we don't have to tidy up, clean around or put away! I certainly hope she carries on with this.

She's set up an instagram account to keep track of what we're getting rid of. You can follow it here and she's using the hashtag #englishhomestead

Do you need to declutter or have you already done it? got any tips and tricks to share to make this process as painless as possible.

  1. I have begun to work on one room at a time. If I haven't used the item in a year, I get rid of it. I'm not going fast, but am making progress.

  2. I had a big sort out of my craft room, although everything is organised there I still go through it an remove stuff I am not going to use, my biggest de-clutter was when we moved, lots or ornaments and what I call tut went, books I kept and occasionaly I go through books find duplicates and pass them on, my grandson is just moving into his first home so I have been going through cupboards finding bits and bobs for him, I dont hoard clutter any more I keep things I will use or have a particular likeness for.

  3. We downsized six years ago and had the biggest declutter. I am loving living with less, being normally tidy I find it easy, and once you live with less it becomes addictive. I love our simple looking house and I know what we have rather than knowing we might have it over there in that huge pile.

  4. My only tip is to work your way around the house slowly and methodically. I even find myself sorting through a drawer while the kettle boils.

It gets addictive and for us is an ongoing process, the more you do it the less you find you need.

Car booting the excess can bring some extra cash in, and could involve the girls making some money from old toys and clothes 😊

  5. I think it is what they call 'stuffocation!' I hate 'stuff' and having just moved house, had no compunction finding new homes for anything we hadn't used for a year or more. What a great feeling.

  6. I keep trying, but it's like painting the Forth Bridge! Never seems to end.

  7. An on-going task here! Trying not to to bring anything in the house that is not really NEEDED but, it doesn't always work.......like the treadle sewing machine in it's own cabinet that my brother is giving me, don't know where it's going to fit in. I thought I could use it and save on electricity.....mmmph!

  8. I am a "Guilt Hoarder" meaning I fell guilty contributing to landfill so I save plastic and cardboard "just in case". I also have emotional attachments to things. Sigh. I have been trying to use the Marie Kondo method of touching my surplus things, and, if they don''t bring me joy, I thank them and let them go.

  11. Well what a timely post. My first trip back into blog land in a while and your posting about what I have just spent days doing. Just decluttered, cleaned out, gone through, every last inch of my sewing/workroom. Filled the back of honeymans truck! Feels so much better in here now. Its easy to think I should save every last scrap from every roman shade I make or any other thing I have sewn over the years which is a lot :O). I can't say I have ever missed anything I have gotten rid of. We have been cleaning out other areas for the last couple years. Haven't missed a thing.

  12. We have a tiny house and too much stuff. I'm gradually decluttering before we move to our new house, I don't want to take anything that we are not going to use.

  13. We have too much clutter. I would love to have a minimalist home but I love collecting retro and vintage things, so I guess I will never make the grade!

I do thin things out often otherwise it overwhelms me.
