Cold Frame Plans - The Woodworker

I stubbed across these wood working plans for a cold frame in an old issue of the woodworker the other day and I thought I'd share them all with you.

I think these cold frames would be great!
What do you think could you follwo these plans form the 1950's?

  2. I have a stack of old reclaimed sleepers, which used to hold back our hillside before the retaining wall went in, that I have my eye on to use as a couple of cold frames, they just need a framework to sit on top of them for the lid. Now I just have to wait for LH to get round to doing them .... maybe in time for next years growing season!

    1. Sounds a good plan. Old windows work well and I've made a few for my mum over the years.

  3. Cold frames are wonderful and we really use them up here in northern Minnesota . . . both at the start and end of our short season.

Your plans look grand. Our cold frames are fairly simplistic. Just a box type affair that sits on top of the frames of our raised beds.

    1. The simplest way is often the best way. A few years ago I made a temporary one with loose bricks and perspex, worked really well.

  5. If you're ever in Hay on Wye a couple of the second hand booksellers have a lot of back issues of woodworking magazines and popular mechanics. The ones in the courtyard opposite the main car park are the best.

    1. We used to go once a year as it's not far from us but there is more charity shops than book shops now (so it seems) although I did buy a woodworker annual last time I went. I love the old fruit and vegetable books as well.

  6. Hi Kev. Jon is planning on changing our strawberry patch into a cold frame thing. Currently, as you may have seen, we have our patch framed by railway sleepers. He has some glass in stock and as he LOVES strawberries so is very keen on making sure we get a fairly good crop, even though it is only the first year we have had them. the rain is making my straw wet and this is not helping. Jon loves working with wood and I think he'd love these old books.

    1. My neighbours have a little 6ft by 4ft greenhouse planted with just strawberries and they love having early ones. I have to admit that I'm not great with strawberries and find that the mice and birds end up with more than me!
