On Thursday my mother took the girls and me out for the day.
Considering we booked this with each other over two months ago we couldn't have asked for better weather. We had a picnic by the river in a village called Pembridge then drove on another 4 miles to a NGS garden at Newport House. The garden was spectacular, it only opens a couple of times a year and if you live in Herefordshire I strongly suggest you check it out (I think it's open this weekend still but you'd need to check). It's privately owned and must have a huge staff to maintain it all.
Two acre lawn to manage anyone? |
Quite a view to the house |
From the house looking down to the lake |
In the 2 1/2 acre walled garden. Just huge and all down to veg, fruit and cut flower production for the family and staff. |
Trained fruit against the walls - every part of the wall had trained fruit of some form |
There is a glass roof over the peaches to stop them getting leaf curl. The metal brackets holding them up were really beautiful. |
Gardeners cottage forming part of the wall. |
One of the four glass houses with cold frames in front |
Brassicas getting a bit of protection from pests |
Another glass house. The top of the roof on this lifts up and down to aid ventilation. Filled with peppers and egg plants |
Close up fo the lifting roof and metal work |
Weed protection with biodegradable plastic |
Trained cherries |
"Cheese" Having some cake and apple juice to finish |
A really enjoyable day out! I'd love a walled garden but I'm more than happy with my place!
That looks a lovely day out and you all obviously enjoyed it. So lucky with the weather as well.
ReplyDeleteIt was a perfect day in fairness.
DeleteThat's my sort of walled garden. Don't you wish you had the gardening help that they have?! I love to see the kitchen gardens of the big houses and this one looks particularly good.
ReplyDeleteI was talking about this to mum. to be honest one thing I really love about my garden is my privacy. So having workers there would wreck it for me.
DeleteI love to look at a practically perfect garden, but at home I prefer a more relaxed view on things, walled gardens hold a fascination, but I do love the fruit sections. Now dreaming of a bigger plot.
ReplyDeleteMy view on mine is certainly relaxed! I obsess about walled gardens and I do love trained fruit trees. My 30 cordons are looking pretty good now.
DeleteThe walled kitchen garden reminds me of the one at Heligan in Cornwall.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest Dave it compared to it. There wasn't the variety that there is at Heligan but it was just as interesting. Lots fo potatoes here. Mum said last time she went (about five years ago) they had 28 types of asparagus.
DeleteLovely place, look at those gardens!
ReplyDeleteI know! It was amazing but still nice to come home to all my weeds!
DeleteI do like a walled garden, but I dont think Martin would like it I suggested it here, the trained fruits are fab :-) I think I will stick with what I have
ReplyDeleteBest not to dream on this scale! It must cost a fortune to keep this running!
DeleteLove the walled garden but all that grass, OMG, talk about a make work project. They must be continually mowing it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I could have 15 sheep on that lawn!
DeletePerfect day out. Enjoyed all your photos but clearly the best of the lot goes to "two adorable little girls in summer hats" - thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI do love their hats and dresses! It won;t be long before they won;t wear what I want them to!
DeleteI've got to make time for a day out here, it looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIt's worth a visit! i think the weather helped as well.
DeleteBeautiful photos! Thank you so much for sharing. :)
ReplyDeleteNo problem, glad you liked them!
DeleteLovely gardens....envious about that oh so tidy veg plot!
ReplyDeleteYeah but UI bet they struggle to make nettle tea like I do!
DeleteOh to live in that gardeners cottage and own that walled garden, I would be in heaven :-)
ReplyDeleteI love going round other folks fruit and veg gardens, it makes me go back and be nice to mine for a while!!
