No BBQ's For A While!

I noticed a blue tit going in and out of our metal BBQ the other day.
When I opened the lid I was greeted by these hungry little mouths.
Perfect little place for them really as they've been using the one vent as an entrance and it's only just big enough to let them in and keep predators out. Looks a cosy little nest as well.

I guess it'll be a few weeks till I have a BBQ then - probably would have rained as soon as I lit it anyway! On the bright side it's really nice that the girls can see them up close without disturbing them.

Where's the weirdest place you've ever found a birds nest?

  1. Wow, that is an awesome picture (and some big mouths, ha). I guess the weirdest place we've had a nest is in a hanging basket on a front porch. Had to let the plant die (couldn't water) but it was worth it. :-)

  3. Great Kev, I hope there is a cover over it so they don't get wet. When I worked on a wildflower nursery years ago, a robin set up nest in the potting shed on the shelf right above where I was working, in one of the seed trays. It didn't seem bothered, just flew in and out as normal whether I was there or not and I had a grandstand view of the proceedings for the next couple of weeks until the young fledged!

  4. oh how sweet!! I adore birds, especially baby ones :) I haven't come across a nest, but last week I did see 3 dead babies that must have gotten blown out of their nest with the wind, the poor little things, they were on the other side of the road from where the bushes and trees were so I put them back under a bush so at least a cat didn't get them

  5. Its that time of year. Just yesterday I posted a photo of a Cardinal that set up home in the Rhododendron bush right by my kitchen window.

  6. I bet you could fit a charcoal briquette into each one of those maws, a little lighter fluid and a match and the problem is solved :)

  7. Birds like to nest in mailboxes here. The most unusual nest place birds I had in the rehab centre was the luggage rack on car in a dealership.

  11. Birds do find interesting places to nest, don't they? Just yesterday, I discovered that a pair of house finches are building their nest IN my front porch light! The top cover of the light had come off and I was planning to replace the fixture, but now, I'll have to wait. Won't be turning on the porch light for a few weeks, either.

  13. They used to get in my chimney. I had to risk my neck climbing all the way up there on a ladder to put a screen over it.
