Shelves For Flour

I added a little more food storage last weekend.
The under stairs cupboard has been much better since I added my can rotator door but there was still a lot of wasted space. I decided to add some shelves one side and a board the other to hang things on.
Shelves added alongside my can rotator door
The shelves were made out of some plywood off cuts, so nothing fancy again, but they do the job and the sheet of ply the other side just makes it easier for me to put up hooks and things when I want.
A board added to the other side to easily fix hooks and hang things on.
I know it's not huge amount of extra food storage but every little helps especially as this will be easy to keep organised. The plan being to keep just flour and sugar on these shelves, the flour can then be easily  rotated so the oldest is used up first. Having flour here will also save space in the freezer as hopefully when we get a bread maker we'll be making bread daily(ish) rather than buying it once a week and freezing it all.
Also if I ever get a grain mill then the bags of flour will be replaced with kilner jars to keep it in and stored in the same place. Keeping it all in one place means that I can see when we're running low and buy more in - I hate running out of anything!
Anyone else been putting more food storage in? No matter how small!

  1. If you have access to any bay leaves then I would suggest placing a few sprigs randomly around your flour. It definitely does assist in preventing weevils from invading your flour.

    1. I have a couple of bay trees by the front door so I might just do that, although they don't stay in the cupboard for long - I do quite a bit of baking!

  2. We purchased and used our bread maker on Monday, the loaf is still fresh this morning, the running cost makes it a dearer loaf, but home made is without so many additives.

    1. I was talking a friend today and she says it only uses about 6p worth of electric - no idea if this is right or not. I'm looking forward to making our own loaves a bit more regularly.

  3. We did food storage a last year I think. We have an area referred to as 'under the stairs'. In reality it is a space between two bedrooms.

  4. The idea for tin storage is excellent. I might need to borrow your idea if i Might? That would save me so much precious cupboard space.

    1. Glad you like it. copy away! I'm all for trying to encourage people to store more food in a logical way, it makes us far less likely to panic when the press wants us to.

  6. As I make all of our bread, rolls, buns, pizza etc I tend to buy flour in bulk, 20kilos at a time. I store it in airtight fermenting bins.
The tin rotater is a fab idea.

    1. That might be something I look into doing. I love buying in bulk, where do you get yours from?

  7. As you say, every extra bit of storage is well worth the effort. I am considering having another building constructed up here, just a simple edifice for storage, but well insulated and equipped for climate control year round. My shop building is getting cluttered with supplies and I'd like to rearrange that, so I think a purpose built store house is in the cards.

    1. My plan is similar this year as well, I'm planning on building a well insulated shed out of block. Rodent proof and heated in the winter to keep the frost off. I like to keep things separate and this would be a good way, I'd like to make more cider and wines as well and this would provide a place to do it. I'd go for it Harry, I bet you won't be limited in size like I am by planning restrictions.
