I think no cake will ever be judged as much as a cake made by the only man in a mainly female playgroup!
It was my turn to make the cake this week - luckily I nailed it!
I wanted a show stopper to impress and kept thinking of different cakes I could make. Then I decided that simple was best and went for a simple Victoria Sponge Sandwich.
The sponge was made using the normal recipe (8oz of flour, 8oz of sugar and 8oz of butter, four eggs and a teaspoon of baking powder) then I added butter icing and homemade damson jam to the middle and dusted the top with icing sugar.
A simple cake that everyone likes, sometimes you can't beat a classic.
Everyone was very complimentary!
What cake would you have made (I need ideas for when it's my turn again!)?
Well that looks absolutely lovely, well done Kev, better than I could do. However, I have no trouble with this one, it's the Pioneer Woman's big chocolate birthday cake... Yum!...http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ree-drummond/big-chocolate-birthday-cake-recipe.html
ReplyDeleteNow that looks good! Trouble is I'd want to eat it all by myself!
DeleteWell done, Kev that looks scrumptious!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It was rather nice!
DeleteYour sponge cake looks good there Kev. When it comes to baking that's about the extent of my knowledge... Good...Not Good. Never baked a thing in my life but I do know when ever you wish to impress a bunch of Women the more chocolate the better. Individually they all claim to not be fond of chocolate but as with most generalities it always seems to work out that way despite the claims to the contrary.
ReplyDeleteI used to be the same but I've really got into it since I've been looking after the kids full time. It's an nice activity to do with them and I get cake in the bargain!
DeleteChocolate is also a way to impress me!
Looks fantastic. Simple but classic. I would try a carrot cake.

Yeah, that's another good one. I love a good carrot cake and normally dairy free which is good fro some as well.
DeletePlay group this month...Great British Bake Off next!

PS Thank you for your kind words. They meant a lot to us both.
Not sure about the Bake Off - I'd probably have a soggy bottom! Hope you guys are doing okay. xx
DeleteI am not a great baker but I find a lemon drizzle cake goes down well with all.
ReplyDeletePat
That is one of my favourites!
DeleteSomething you like so if there is any left you can take it home!!
ReplyDeleteAny cake left went to the churches coffee morning so no such luck!
DeleteI would nip down to Tesco and buy a novelty cake and modestly tell them it's not very good but your pleased with your home baking efforts.
ReplyDeleteWe never buy cake any more. If I want some I have to bake it. And I like a lot of cake!
DeleteI used to hate the cake sessions at playgroup when it came round to my turn as I am not a cake baker.
ReplyDeleteWell done it looks yummy, look forward to seeing you on the Bake Off :-)
I bake so little. We are not much of sweet eaters here but once in a while I make some muffins or a banana bread. Your cake looks nice.
ReplyDeleteThough I did start making some vegan ice creams this last summer we did enjoy those :O)
