A Spot Of Fencing On A Sunny Sunday

Yesterday turned out to be a perfect Autumn day, with crisp sunshine.
I decided to take advantage of how wet it was under foot and finish putting in some fence posts I've been meaning to do all year.
This finishes off the bottom area of the coppice around some old larch trees. Because of where these are I had to put them in by hand - never a fun job!
I also added the bracing so I'm now ready to install all the wire. Another few weekends and about 8 rolls of wire and I should have the whole place fenced ready for some stock.
I've also got about 6 gates to hang. I'll have to do these with an old fashioned brace and bit (believe it or not I was taught to fit locks with one when I was an apprentice) as the power won't stretch that far. Hanging gates on your own isn't easy but I'm sure by the end of them I will have found an easy way to do it!
How does everyone elses fences look at time of year? Many repairs needed?

  1. I always fence with the tractor and box full of tools. Bought a couple of cheap rolls of sheep wire the other week from a man in his van. You can always barter or haggle over the price. Could you imagine going in a supermarket and haggling over the price of your shopping?

I think fencing is a two person job. Especially when you are straining the wire or walking backwards and forwards with posts.

    1. It's funny as I'm sure that supermarkets are the ones that could afford to haggle even more than anyone else when you see their end of year profits. It is a two man job really but I have to do it on my own, my brother and dad did help me put in the posts though so I can't complain. It's aright once you've got a system in place.

    1. We had lots last week and the ground is saturated but it was lovely and sunny. I could have stripped down to a T-shirt.

  3. I need to do fence work but so far they keep the horse in which is the easiest animal to contain. Rain here but at least it is warm for a change.

    1. No horses here. I planning on sheep/goat and pigs so fencing needs to be good! My eldest keeps telling me she wants pigs and goats so I doubt I have much choice. I just have to worry when she wants a pony!

  4. Interestingly enough I did a post about a little fencework today as well. I do all my fence work in late Fall, Winter or very early Spring myself as it's just easier not fighting the heavy weeds, ticks and chiggers then. I use my post hole digger on my tractor for gates though and to stretch my wire.
