A Good Can Opener?

If there was an award for the most boring blog post then I'm sure that this would be up there, but I need your advice!
Lately I've been destroying can openers like there's no tomorrow, any plastic part gets crushed or cogs get stripped. I've been resorting to using the broken can openers one little bit at a time, rather than winding them round, like you would a can opener on a multi tool. Well it's that or going outside and rubbing it on a paving slab for a few minutes and popping the top off - which works surprisingly well, there's a good video on YouTube about it here
Two failed can openers, there have been two more lately as well.
The plastic parts seem to be what fails first. So the other day I brought an all metal one, but it isn't strong enough and the handle has already started to bend, that and it keeps slipping off the rim. I don't mind spending money on something that's going to last, and there seems to be plenty of choice out there, I don't want an electric one, just a good solid manual one.
So your recommendations will be greatly received and I'll buy the one most people think is any good, even if I have to import it from the States!
Sorry this is such a boring post but there's little point of having canned food if you can't open it and I'm fed up of buying rubbish!

  1. There are some good tin openers on Ebay, Kev. If you want to spend two hundred quid. Have a look at the Nemco pro can opener.

I like ring pulls on beans cans. I think it only the dearer food brands that have them.

    1. I think that might be a little out of my budget! No chance of us having dearer branded canned goods here! I'm off to Lidi tomorrow to stock up on cheap cans!

  2. Sounds like too much muscle to me, my cheapy from Dunelm has been working for 3 years with no problems.

    1. My wife struggled with the cheapy one as well so it can just be my muscle!

  3. As I have RA I've used an electric can opener for years the most recent and the one I recommend to anyone who shows the slightest interest is the JML can opener

You can get them all over the place now but they ready do, do a fantastic job....
I've had mine about 3 years and only had to change the batteries once.
I've also got the jar opener and that is brilliant too....
Over the years I've tried so many gadgets and these 2 deserve the space in my batterie de cuisine drawer;-)

    1. I was trying to steer clear of anything involving batteries really, I'm thinking really long term here. thanks though - I think we used one of them on Holiday a few years ago and it seemed pretty good.

  4. We use a P-38 and it's the best can opener I've ever had. The only trouble is it's so small. I'm terrible at misplacing things and I worry that will happen with this, but so far I always remember to put it back in the kitchen drawer where it lives!

    1. I like them as well but my wife doesn't like to use it. It needs to be a bit more user friendly, although I might pick one up to have as a spare.

  6. You must have strong hands Kev! My can opener is a cheepo and still does the job,.....good luck with finding the right can opener..must be frustrating to have one break right in the middle of cooking food.

  7. I use the one on the right of your photo, just a cheapo one. I struggle with all the ones that are fancy and take of the entire top including the rim.

Maybe you are just so strong they buckle under your strength :-)

Once you find one that works .... be nice to it!!

    Good luck.

    1. This one is short listed as well. I was pout off my the plastic look of the handles before, I just want something practical.

  9. I have had the same issues for years. Even expensive new can openers seem to break quickly or the little cutting wheel begins to rust no matter how hard you try and stop it. I finally just went out and found an old one at a sale that was still functional. I guess the new materials they use, even the steel, are just substandard.

    1. I've thought about just getting a second hand one. We've got an antique dealer that lives next door, maybe I can get him to search one out for me!

  10. Flea markets & antique stores usually have a jar of kitchen tools where one can be found cheap. They made can openers much sturdier in the "good old days" with better steel, and made to last..

  11. I use a Good Grips can opener. It has worked for about 8 years now and still going strong. No plastic, except for the slightly squishy handles that feel good.

    1. I think I'd better go to a kitchen shop and have a look at some of these. I though the Good Grips ones had a plastic bit between the cogs and that's what put me off as that's what I break.

  12. I have a Good Grips can opener that I bought when I lived in the UK, and I've been home in NZ since early 2005. It is still working perfectly. I love the Good Grips range of products, I highly recommend them.

  14. I for one will be waiting for the answer. My hands are just not strong enough any more for the conventional openers but like you I don't know what type to get. I shall keep watching your posts.

  15. Well I am no help. Honeyman and I just had a big discussion about how nothing is lasting any length of time now. Seems its just all garbage. Hate to be so negative but well it seems true. Good luck on your quest for a good quality product! I too have liked the oxo good grip brand ....that has been mentioned, but I must say I have recently ran into some issues with their products as well! argghhh....

  16. I inherited this one from my Dad, who had inherited it frrom his brother! Takes a bit of getting used to but no muscle involved. Highly recommended! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kuhn-Rikon-Safety-Lifter-Black/dp/B000I7GST2/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1413203510&sr=8-12&keywords=kuhn+rikon
