My sliced, roast, rosemary and garlic potatoes have become one of the staples of my weekly cooking lately, but the other night I thought I should try and make them a bit more child friendly. Not by cutting back on the flavour though!
Cookie cutters with potatoes (in fact these are from her play-doh set!) |
I raided my little girls play-doh set and found some of the different shaped cutters in there and used these on slices of potatoes. So simple I don't know why I hadn't thought of it before!
Both parts of the potato add a bit of interest and give more crispy edges! |
Plenty of rosemary and garlic to be cut up fine and mixed with a cold pressed rapeseed oil |
The finished thing |
When I brought them out I got a "Wow Dad" which is always nice (even if she sometimes says the same thing when I get her a cup of water!), but I thought this idea is a fun way to get kids to eat home made cooking and, although simple, I thought I'd put it on here.
Anyone else do something similar?
That is a brilliantly clever idea!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I think it's one of those ones that's so simple you can't believe you didn't think of it!
DeleteIf only more parents would make food more "child appealling" then there would be less demands for junk food. Well done :)
ReplyDeleteWhat else could this be applied to...? Eggy bread, pie crusts, etc. And how about making spinach or cabbage "parcels" (seasoned mince, wrapped in leaves which they normally wouldn't eat). Or a baked potato with a carrot nose, pea eyes, and broccoli spear ears LOL
Thinking what to feed the family every day can sometimes become a chore - if you're anything like me, there are loads of recipes "out there" but, when it comes time to putting a meal together, I invariably go blank, and end up asking RMan "what would you like for dinner"?. Making food fun for kids makes the meal preparation more fun for us cooks too ;)
I like the idea of the baked potato with a carrot nose! I think Ev would love that!
DeleteDeciding what to cook is the worst bit of cooking for me! The trouble is you fall into the routine of cooking the same things each week, so I'm trying hard to come up with something different. I spend a bit of time looking in recipe books or staring into the cupboard wondering what goes with what. Now there's more food in the garden growing it becomes a little easier as I can base meal around that. I was thinking of doing a competition where other bloggers get to decide what we eat for a week, but maybe in the autumn when we've got more produce to choose from!
Great idea Kev. When the kids were young. We use to have a dish with a picture of Mickey Mouse on the bottom. So the quicker they ate their pudding/dinner. The quicker you would see Mickey's face. Wonder if I could one for myself with Britney Spears face?
ReplyDeleteWould that be britney before her trip into rehab? Otherwise you may want to leave some gravy on your plate!
DeleteGreat idea Kev. Yet again proving that interesting things don't cost a lot of money and can even be grown yourself too. I reckon you have the words "Self Sufficient" through you like a stick of rock!
ReplyDeleteThat would be a great quote! Maybe someone will put that on my gravestone!
DeleteWell done, Kevin! Young kids would go nuts for that.
ReplyDeleteIt's always nice when you get a "wow!" when you bring the food out!
DeleteI'll try it with Chris!
ReplyDeleteJane x
Sounds like a plan! let me know what he thinks!
Deletesandwiches and to get them to eat more at breakfast we used cutters on a piece of toast and then put it in a non stick frying pan and cracked an egg into it. My nephew thinks this is "the Biz" as he says (hes 4).
ReplyDeleteand bacon wrapped veg, for the real veg phobic child. then you make the bacon thinner and thinner until it is only a band and then just give up.
I would love someone to help me want to eat cauliflower and broccoli! lol the texture makes me gag.
Make a "blitzed" soup - I do that to get RMan to eat a good portion :) You'll get the goodness / roughage without the texture. And a sprinkle of nutmeg helps disguise the flavour.
DeleteI like the egg idea although my little girl goes mad for eggs as she likes anything she can "dip dip dip" into! And we struggle to get her to eat meat not veg. She doesn't really like meat but will eat most veg, strange child!
DeleteDani- Like I've just said to Sol, if she can have something to "dip" then she's happy, so soup works well if she's got some soldiers or bits of fresh bread she will eat it. So far...
Very imagainative, a lot better than those reformed potato shapes you see in the freezers in supermarkets, Hash Browns you could do it with as well.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I guess thats what gave me the idea, but if they can aim their food at children so can I!
DeleteA brilliant idea, so simple and yet so good.
ReplyDeleteYou could also fill the holes in the middle of the potatoes with some egg and turn them into lovely little healthy shapes.
Good idea, She does love eggs, but likes it when she can "dip"
DeleteJust found your blog and utterly love those potatoes. I shall be doing this the next time we fancy 'wedges'
ReplyDeleteThe kids do love them and it makes it a bit more interesting for them! Glad you like it.
