Building In Extra Storage

The other weekend I had a bit of a frenzy on putting in shelves and extra storage. After being at home in the week full time, I could really see where we were lacking storage and where it might make life a little easier.
More storage in the airing cupboard - somewhere to keep all the towels. They all come out easily if I need access to the tank..

Not the prettiest shelf above the fridge but it doubles the storage for all our Tupperware and tins

A shelf across a window that we never use. A better use of the space we think!

Shelve above the door. A shelf that only I can reach! (Man that wall needs some more paint)!

Tins and jar storage (the bottom shelf was added recently the others added when we moved in)
We don't live in the biggest house, but I like to think we're making the most of the space we have. When we build the extension hopefully we'll be able to incorporate some clever use of space and storage for essential things like food and linen.
Anyone else been adding storage in random places lately?

  1. I the idea of the storage above the door, a friend of mine has had shelves built above her doors with small shelves forming pillars down each side and she uses them for storing cd,s and dvd,s I have always admired the great use of space and thought we might do something similar with books.

    1. That sounds a good idea. We've got two tall and narrow bookshelves that are great. They get moved around the house quite often when we have aq reshuffle! They currently live in the living room after being on the landing for two years.

  2. Our house is full of books, too much furniture, ornaments, pictures... I must stop going to car boot sales. Do I really need 6 brass Victorian candlesticks? What will happen to all all my clutter when I die? Bet it all gets sold on a car boot sale? Then there is the garage and the tractors..., hmm..?

Seriously. You can never have enough storage , especially sheds and out buildings. Looks like you are very well organized, Kev.

    1. I've never been a big fan of oraments but we've still got enough in the house. And looks can be deceiving Dave, I'm far from organised! I wish I was!

  3. Some brilliant shelves there Kev, you're making good use of the space. I have always suspected that if I went away for a couple of weeks and left LH in charge some of the things I have to 'make do' with would suddenly be sorted out and fixed and even moved to more sensible places!!

One tip that I used was to buy a great big Tupperware style box, the sort you would only use every now and then on family picnics etc and use it to store all the smaller ones in. Neatens up the storage area and is occasionally useful :-)

    2. It's funny how much I notice things now. I've made a real effort with this house to not leave DIY jobs too long. The last place we lived I kept putting them off and off and when you get round to doing them you wonder why!
The large box is a good idea.

  4. I try not to use my tumble drier too often but, can't stand wet clothes and towels about the house, so I dragged the TD back into the house from the brick store outside, into what was once the coal store. I'd painted the walls in matt brilliant white emulsion and had an Ikea galvanised shelving rack in there for tinned food etc.
I put an off-cut of carpet on top of the TD, then two pieces of 2" x 1" wood across the TD to rest the shelving rack on as it is wider just, than the TD.
There's a double socket in there to, saves me trailing an electric cable out in all weathers to the store and gives me more storage in the brick store for gardening stuff etc.
I plan to put up some more shelving in the brick store and somehting suspended from the plywood ceiling to put things like garden canes up there in the winter.

    1. Sounds like a good plan. I have to admit though I like my shelves fixed to walls otherwise I could put money on my wife knocking it over!

  5. Storage is a good thing for sure! I used our guest bedroom closet to make a pantry. We rarely ever have company and it is a nice sized closet. I felt it was much better use being a pantry than sitting there empty waiting on the rare guest LOL.

    1. That sounds like the best idea. Our cupboards are taken up with clothes or kids toys so no chance of that here!

  6. We used to keep jam and chutney in banana boxes under the bed, i know a bloggy friend who has a kitched shed, one of those bike sheds for all the demi johns jars etc that she doesn't have room for in the real kitchen.

    1. The "kitchen shed" is something I'm planning on building in the next few months. Big plans on that one!
