Joining Flocks Of Chickens

After the fox attack on Friday night I decided to join my two flocks of chickens in the "semi fox proof" pen. joining flocks of chickens isn't something to be undertaken lightly but it went smoothly with very little fighting. Mainly due to this chap I think:
A good cockerel does keep the ladies in order. Having double the number of hens he didn't know which way to turn when he was let out!
Thank you to everyone that commented on my last post. I know none of us like loosing our livestock to predators but we also know it's a part of keeping livestock. The old phrase "If you've got livestock, you've got dead stock" Springs to mind.

  2. Yes, you can only be philosophical about it - we have lost chickens in the past as we do free range rather than locked up, although we do lock them up at night. Still sad and infuriating though.

    1. We lock ours up at night as well. a ritual I've been doing as long as I can remember! It always feels weird if we have any times without chickens now.

  3. I'm glad the move went well. I suspect you'll have to get rid of the fox eventually, or it will spend the rest of its life "guarding" your chickens.

  4. Good looking fella, lets hope he keeps good order and offers some protection to the girls.

    1. As I've been working near them the last couple of days I can say that he really does keep order in quite a quiet way. So long as he has plenty of sex he has a great temperament!

  5. We lost a chook this week, my fav Oxo, she will be sadly missed. We are going to get some more but I'm also worried about mixing them together. We haven 't got a cockerel as the neighbours may grumble.

I hope all went well with the greenhouse. I remember collecting ours, hubby dismantled and I had to carry the pieces to the car which was a mile away, in full sun and we forgot to take drinks...... Sahara sprang to mind and hubby (who was in the shade) didn't know why I was moaning!

I love your blog and thanks for popping over to mine PiC x

    1. We had problems in our last house when the neighbour moaned about the cockerel. So I killed it and ate it for Sunday roast but apparently that wasn't the right thing to do either as she was quite taken aback when I told her!
The greenhouse has been an interesting experience. No instructions and we didn't even take it down so all guess work to start with! Yours sounded like a fun experience!
