Back in January I fitted a new loft hatch so we could get into our loft easily. Since then I've put a few things up there but I've been holding out on using it much until I got it boarded out - not a job I was looking forward to!
This Saturday came and my usual Saturday work was cancelled so I thought I might as well get it done. I didn't want to board the whole thing, just an area down the middle so some boxes could be stored up there.
The main problem was the insulation. Ours is quite thick and laid double thickness. I first had to roll the top layer back and add some 4x2s running perpendicular to the joist. Once these were fixed in place I relaid the insulation between the timbers (this way it's not being squashed so doesn't loose it's efficiency) before laying the boards.
Three bloody great tanks made out of galv steel about 1/4" thick - no chance of getting these down until I do something major to the roof! |
It took about half a day to do all this but I did have a mate round for an hour just to pass the boards up to me.
This means that baby stuff can now be on rotation a little more rather than just hanging around while we wait for baby number two to grow into it! Also some of my old books are going up here because I will be soon loosing the spare room as my office due to having more people than we do rooms!
A good storage space but one we need to be careful that we don't keep things up there just for the sake of keeping them!
Job well done Kev - and yes most of us do tend to keep things just because we have the space!! But you will have more space and room to move downstairs now!
ReplyDeleteMost of our stuff we want to keep is either baby stuff or camping stuff. Both lots we want to keep but not stuff that we need all the time.
DeleteWow what an excellent job you have done. I am hoping to have a house with a loft we can get into next time. Do you have one of those loft hatches with the stairs that come down? Did you make it your self. also just for info right now. but those shelves you made that were like tetris. Could you do those as a commission. My FIL has to come and live with us in the next house and I want a divider in a room, as he will have a small kitchette, and I thought that would make an excellent use of space and will look stylish which appeals to me greatly. I am aware that if I don't put a lot of thought into it, it is going to look like we just threw him in there. (I live in Gloucestershire by the way). I am finding good trades men that actually turn up, extremely hard to find...
ReplyDeleteI do commissons! In fact I guess thats what all my work is. I build or fit pretty much anything to do with houses. If you go on my other blog (www.sawdustinmysocks.com) then you can see the type of work I do. I'm in herefordshire so you shouldn't be too far away (depending on what side of Gloucestershire you are) so I'm sure I could give you an estimate as to what you want done. Although not before Christmas (or for a few months really as I'm booked up!) Drop me an email: kevalviti at hotmail dot com.
Deletewe hope to have moved by end of april. it is so hard around here to find work men that want to come out and even quote. we move quite often so when we find someone who is good we like to keep them.
DeleteI will defo drop you an email when we are in as we will have to have my FIL area sorted before he moves in. to limit the stress on him, not only moving in with us, but his loss of independence and his little house in Scotland. so I want everything perfect for him.
off to look at the other blog
Nice job - we boarded out our loft and it is now full of stuff :)
ReplyDeleteThats the trouble! I will be good though and only store stuff we really need/want to keep!
DeleteA good job there.
ReplyDeleteWe purposefully do not board lofts and then we can't store anything up in them, keeps us on our toes dealing with any clutter build up :-)
Your much better at that than me. We're also not sure where we're going with children yet so it would be a shame to get rid of all our baby stuff and then have to buy it again if we have anymore!
