Central Heating On For The First Time This Season

Well last night I got talked into putting the central heating on for the first time this season.
More to see if the boiler still works after having the last six months or so off (I think it might be older than me) and also to heat the parts of the house that the wood burning stove can't reach - The bathroom is not a room you want to hang about in after your shower at the moment!

The wood burning stove has been great so far this season and saved us loads in heating as it really takes the chill off the house, some days my wife has had it running all day and you can really tell the difference. It has been mild this autumn so that's helped with heating costs and we all wrap up warm before going for the heating - well I write this in a T shirt but apparently I'm not normal!
Everyone else fired up their central heating?

  1. Wood Fire heating cannot be beaten for that cosy, homey warmth - it seems to get into the building materials whereas other heating seems to heat the air only. No preening in front of the bathroom mirror after a shower!!!lol We are doing the opposite to you Kev - cranking up the air cons - last couple of days have been 38deg (cel). Although today has dropped back to mid 20's and rain predicted - better enjoy that while we can - jan and Feb are renowned for mid 40's!!

    1. That sounds far too hot to me! No air con needed in the UK really unless your in a hot car stuck in traffic! I do love it when I get home from work and the fires been lit and the house has that warm feeling to it!

  2. Here in West Virginia, we've cranked up the heater several times already. It's supposed to dip down to 29F tonight and they're predicting a few weeks of snow next week. I hope they're wrong; it seems a bit early for such things.

    1. It's horrible when the bad weather comes early. This year its late for us, so it's been nice to save money and not have the heating on and not feel like we need it.

  3. My heating has been coming on automatically in the mornings the last couple of days. The thermostat is set at 18c so it's gone below that. I have the heating of during the day as it's just me at home until children come home.

    1. I suppose we should keep the house warmer because of having two under two at home all day but they seem quite used to it! I'm terrible because my body always seems to be a lot hotter than my wifes (in termperature that is!)

  4. Yes but our central heat is wood fired as we don't have a typical wood stove. It is 25 F (7 degrees below freezing) right now at sunrise and 70 F inside so it keeps the house warm.

    1. 7 below would be a very cold night here and it would be that low for long. I like the idea of a completly wood fired heating system but I think I would need more land to be able to grow all the wood for it!

  5. Our Rayburn wood burning stove is still in its wrappings, and is likely to stay that way for much of this winter! Not to worry, living in caravans for three years has certainly helped us adapt to the cold, so most times we don't have any heating on in the house at all, but we do keep a radiator on in the bathroom to stop any damp problems. We used to have full central heating in the UK, and along with the heated air came coughs and colds which seemed to have both me and Lester feeling unwell for much of the winter, but now we are living in fresh air, we are most definitely a lot healthier.

    1. I've seen your rayburn and I'm quite jelous! I don't suffer too much with colds and the like (except what my little girl gives me) as I work outside much of the time so I'm pretty used to the cold.

  6. We don't have central heating so the wood stove is our favourite thing in the winter!

  7. We turned ours on the other day to see if it worked okay. We too use wood stoves. We have two in the house. Last winter never had to turn on the central heat woowhoo. Would be nice if that holds true again this year.
